Field Hockey Edged at Wellesley, 2-1

Box Score

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team was edged at host Wellesley College, 2-1, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Butler Stadium in Wellesley, Mass.

The Lyons fall to 2-7 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Blue improve to 4-4 and 2-0.

Wellesley controlled play for the entire match, outshooting Wheaton, 26-2 and held the Lyons without a shot for the final three quarters of play. Despite that, Wheaton was able to get on the board first midway through the opening quarter for the first of three goals scored in just over eight minutes of play between the two schools.

The Lyons broke into the scoring column with 6:28 left to play in the first quarter off their only penalty corner of the afternoon. Senior forward Gabby Monfredo (Worcester, Mass.) took the insert pass at the top of the circle and sent a short cross to her left to senior forward Sophie Shekarchi (Jamestown, R.I.), who fired a shot from just inside the circle that found the back of the cage for her team-high fourth marker of the season and a 1-0 Wheaton lead. Shekarchi now has three goals in her last two games.

Wellesley knotted the score with just 37.8 seconds left in the first quarter when sophomore midfielder Camille Newman (Manhattan, N.Y.) lifted a shot just over the reach of the Lyons keeper to pull the home team even at 1-1. The goal was her first of the season.

The Blue continued their momentum into the second quarter, scoring just 111 seconds into the period to take a 2-1 edge. Junior forward Alex Lenart (Princeton Junction, N.J.) sent the insert pass on a penalty corner to sophomore forward Rose Weseley (New York, N.Y.), who was waiting on the left edge of the circle. Weseley wound up and sent a low shot past the Wheaton keeper and into the inside of the left post for her second goal of the year and the last tally of the day.

The Lyons defense held strong for the final 43:09 of play, despite 20 shots from host Wellesley for the remainder of the match.

Junior goalie Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) turned away eight shots for Wheaton, while Kyra Deehr-Lewis () did not stop a shot during the contest for the Blue.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, October 1 when they host Smith College on Nordin Field for a 12:00 p.m. match in NEWMAC play, while Wellesley heads to Waterville, Maine to play University of New England on September 28 at 6:00 p.m.
