Box Score NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 shutout to visiting University of Massachusetts Boston this afternoon at Mirrione Stadium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons dip to 3-4 on the season, while the Beacons improve to 1-4-2 on the season. The win for UMB was the first-ever over Wheaton and snapped a four-game losing streak to the Lyons.
Wheaton owned a decisive 7-1 advantage on corner kicks and a 16-10 shot advantage, but UMass Boston was able to make the most of its opportunities.
Senior forward Kaylee Haynes (Bridgewater, Mass.) assisted on the game-winning score and netted a goal of her own to lead the Beacons.
Haynes set up the game's first marker on a throw-in in the 33rd minute of play. She hurled a long throw from the left side into the box, where junior midfielder Elia Velez (Middleboro, Mass.) settled the ball, turned and fired a shot inside the left post for her first collegiate goal to give the visitors a 1-0 edge.
The Lyons looked to pull even midway through the second half when senior forward Sadie Recht (Los Angeles, Calif.) fired a shot from the top right corner of the box ticketed for the inside of the far left post, but UMB senior keeper Maria Spylios (Leominster, Mass.) fully extended herself on a diving stop to her right to keep the home team off the board.
The Beacons put an insurance goal on the board in the 69th minute for a 2-0 lead. First year midfielder Callia Eaton (Mashpee, Mass.) picked up her first collegiate point when she sent a cross from the right side of the box to Haynes in the near right post for a shot into the right side of the net for her first tally of the season.
Junior goalie Felicia Fauteux (Granby, Conn.) turned away six shots for Wheaton. Spylios stopped all four shots she faced to record her 16th career shutout to tie Kristen Spain (2012-16) for UMass Boston's all-time mark for blank sheets.
