CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The fifth-seeded Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team was defeated by top-seed and No. 8 nationally-ranked Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 3-0, this afternoon in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Championship Tournament semifinals at Roberts Field in Cambridge, Mass.
The Lyons complete their season with an 11-8 record, while the Engineers, who are ranked in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, extend their unbeaten streak to 12 with their fourth straight win and improve to 19-2-1.
MIT scored twice in the first half and added an insurance marker in the second half, backed by a 21-1 shot advantage. The Engineers were awarded all 16 corner kicks in the match.
Graduate student midfielder Natalie Barnouw (Los Angeles, Calif.) netted a pair of goals to lead MIT.
Wheaton senior keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) stopped eight shots to give her 503 career saves to become the second player in Wheaton program history to reach the milestone.
MIT scored twice in a span of 3:52 in the first half to take a 2-0 margin. Despite the efforts from Bandrup. Senior midfielder Alice Vranka (Bronxville, N.Y.) fired a shot that Bandrup denied with a diving stop to her right, before Barnouw also fired on Bandrup, but again she was there for the stop. Barnouw collected the second rebound and was able to power it past Bandrup for the Engineers' first marker of the day in the 18th minute of play. Barnouw was in the right place at the right time again when senior midfielder Leena Mehendale (Dallas, Texas) directed a shot off the left post that fortuitously bounced to Barnouw for a rebound shot that found the back of the net with 23:48 to play in the first session. The tally was her team-high 18th goal of the season and gave the home team a two-goal lead.
MIT added a third marker in the 72nd minute of play. First year forward Andrea Cummings (Seattle, Wash.) carried the ball up the middle of the field, before sending a lead cross to junior forward Ayla Sumer (Dallas, Texas) on the right side of the box. Sumer used the angle to zip a shot past Bandrup and into the far left corner of the net for her second tally of the year with 18:56 remaining in the contest.
Starting goalie Ava Muffoletto (Kings Park, N.Y.) was untested in the first half for the Engineers, before yielding to sophomore Maddy Noll (Northbrook, Ill.), who stopped the only shot she faced from Lyon senior forward
Ali Roche (Maynard, Mass.).
