Box Score MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team fell at host Wesleyan University, 6-0, this afternoon at Smith Field in Middletown, Conn.
The Lyons fall to 1-6 on the season, while the Cardinals improve to 2-1.
Wesleyan outshot Wheaton, 34-2, in the match and owned a commanding 11-1 advantage on penalty corners.
The Cardinals scored twice each in the first and second quarters to take a 4-0 lead at the intermission.
Senior forward Diana Schwarz (Etna, N.H.) led Wesleyan with a pair of goals and added an assist to give her a five-point afternoon.
Schwarz put the Cardinals on the board just 1:44 into the match, before junior forward Ava Galdenzi (North Branford, Conn.) took a feed from sophomore midfielder Helen Deretchin (Circleville, N.Y.) and found the back of the cage with 53 seconds to play in the opening quarter to take a 2-0 margin.
Schwarz' second marker of the game and third of the season came midway through the second quarter at 22:13 of the match to increase the home team's lead to 3-0. Schwarz assisted on Wesleyan's fourth goal less than four minutes later with a cross to first year forward Georgia Adams (Andover, Mass.), which resulted in the rookie's second goal of the year with 3:57 remaining in the half.
Wheaton's defense held the Cardinals scoreless for the third quarter, but senior forward Lois Schwarz (Etna, N.H.) put a goal on the board just 4:06 into the fourth quarter to give Wesleyan a 5-0 advantage. Deretchin recorded her second assist of the afternoon when she found sophomore midfielder Imani Ochieng (Pottstown, Pa.) for her first collegiate goal coming just 36 seconds after the Schwarz tally to give the Cardinals their sixth and final goal of the match.
Sophomore midfielder Delia Knox (Cumberland, Maine) and junior midifielder Mackenzie Yates (Brownsville, Vt.) each registered a shot for the Lyons.
Wheaton junior keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) made a career-high 17 saves, while junior goalie Kylie Nelson-Marois (Dover, N.H.) stopped the only shot she faced for Wesleyan to record her second career shutout.
The Lyons return to action on Tuesday, September 20 when they host Worcester State University on Nordin Field at 7:00 p.m., while the Cardinals host Tufts University in a New England Small College Athletic Conference contest on September 21 at 6:00 p.m.
