Women's Soccer Defeated at No. 11 Babson, 2-0

Box Score

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team was defeated by host No. 11 Babson College, 2-0, this afternoon in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference opener at Hartwell-Rogers Field in Babson Park, Mass.

The Lyons fall to 3-3 overall, including 0-1 in league play, while the Beavers, who are ranked in the most recent United Soccer Coaches poll, improve to a perfect 6-0 and 1-0. The Beavers increase their unbeaten streak dating back to last season to 14 straight.

First year forward Meredith Greeley (Ottawa Hills, Ohio) and senior midfielder Maria Colon Figueroa (Needham, Mass.) scored in the span of 15 minutes around halftime to provide the difference for Babson

Graduate student forward Izzy Lynch (Niskayuna, N.Y.) extended her points streak to six games with a second-half assist and senior goalkeeper Morgan Fedosiewich (Ottawa, Ontario) made five saves, all in the first half, to keep her fourth clean sheet of the season for the Beavers.

First-year keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) stopped eight of nine shots in the opening half and Gabby Marcus (Austin, Texas) turned away three of four second-half shots for the Lyons.

Bandrup came off her line to make a sliding kick save on Lynch's bid to open the scoring in the 16th minute before Greeley gave the Green and White a 1-0 advantage in the 37th minute. Junior Sophia Bishop (Oakton, Va.) played a ball into the box that deflected off a Wheaton defender before Greeley touched home the loose ball for her first career goal.

Greeley nearly doubled the advantage minutes later for Babson, but Bandrup tipped her shot from the top of the box off the crossbar. Colon Figueroa was denied by a diving save from Marcus just over five minutes into the second half but buried a feed from Lynch inside the right post in the 52nd minute for her first tally of the year to make it 2-0 for the Beavers.

Babson did not allow a shot on target over the final 45 minutes. Fedosiewich had to punch away a shot by Wheaton first year defender Francesca Freeman (Portland, Maine) near the top of the box in the 23rd minute and made a diving stop of first year forward Amanda Castaldi's (Wallingford, Conn.) shot from the right side of the box in the 36th minute.

First year forward Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) was in alone on Fedosiewich but missed just wide with her attempt from the top of the box in the 75th minute for the Lyons and senior midfielder Julia Markmann (Sonderborg, Denmark) hit the crossbar from 20 yards out in the 79th minute.

The Beavers finished with a 19-8 edge in shots and attempted seven of the 10 corner kicks in the match.

Both teams return to action on Wednesday, September 21 as Wheaton hosts University of Massachusetts Boston at Mirrione Stadium at 4:00 p.m. and Babson travels to Beverly, Mass. to play 21st-ranked Endicott College at 7:00 p.m.
