Women's Tennis Takes Down Smith, 7-2

NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team won two of three doubles and five of six singles to gain a 7-2 victory over visiting Smith College this morning in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference contest in the Beard Field House on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The Lyons have won three of their last four and improve to 5-8 overall and 2-1 in league play, while the Pioneers fall to 3-5 and 0-3.

Wheaton featured four double-winners in the match. 

The Lyons won at number one and number three doubles to take a 2-1 edge following doubles action. Senior Miriam Galindo Cerrada (Madrid, Spain) combined with sophomore Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) to down first year twins Clara and Lili Goshgairan (Lake Forest, Ill.), 8-4, at first doubles. First year Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) paired with Wheaton sophomore Zoe West (Flushing, N.Y.) for their fifth straight win in an 8-3 decision over senior Elsa Hillis and first year Olivia Monos (Reading, Pa.) for Smith at number three.

Galindo Cerrada won in straight sets over Lili Goshgairan, 6-2, 6-2, at number one singles to give Wheaton a 3-2 lead in the dual match. Muller and first year Alexa Monos (Reading, Pa.) traded 6-1 results in the first two sets at fourth singles with Mueller rebounding to take the second frame before winning the third set, 6-3, to take the match and give the Lyons the decisive fifth point. Kruse batted to a 7-5 win in the opening set at fifth singles, before settling down for a 6-2 result in the second set over Olivia Monos for her fourth straight singles win. West grinded to a 7-5 showing in the first set at number six singles over sophomore Miranda Gibson (Bethlehem, Pa.), before taking the second frame, 6-4 to gain her third win in a row. Senior Katie Steinberg (Cumberland, Maine) dropped just three games for the Lyons in a 6-1, 6-2 victory at third singles over junior Ashley Felix (El Paso, Texas) for the Pioneers.

Felix and Alexa Monos combined for Smith's only win in doubles play, defeating senior Alexis Acosta (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Steinberg at second doubles, 8-6.

Clara Goshgairan registered the lone singles win for the Pioneers with a 6-2, 6-2, triumph over Acosta at number two.

Wheaton returns to the court on Thursday, April 14 when it heads to Babson Park, Mass. to take on NEWMAC rival Babson College at 4:00 p.m., while Smith hosts conference foe Mount Holyoke College on April 12 at 5:00 p.m.
