WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team swept doubles play and won five of six singles to earn an 8-1 victory over host Clark University this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at Corash Tennis Courts in Worcester, Mass. The Lyons finish their regular season with a 6-12 overall record, including 3-5 in league play, while the Cougars fall to 4-12 and 0-8.
Sophomore Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) dropped just two games the entire day between doubles and singles play for Wheaton. She earned a 6-1, 6-1 win at fifth singles over Clark junior Maeve McEnroe (Marion, Mass.). Mueller teamed with senior Miriam Galindo Cerrada (Madrid, Spain) for an 8-0 win at number one doubles to open the scoring over the Cougars duo of senior Grayson LaCroix (Cherry Valley, Mass.) and sophomore Hannah Russo (Bridgewater, Mass.). Galindo Cerrada was also a double-winner for the Lyons, taking a 6-2, 6-1 decision over Russo at first singles.
Senior Alexis Acosta (Albuquerque, N.M.) dominated at third singles for Wheaton with a 6-0, 6-0 effort over Clark first year Leilani Brown. She also won in doubles action for the Lyons, teaming with senior Katie Steinberg (Cumberland, Maine) for an 8-5 victory at number two doubles over Brown and junior Liliya Georgista (Greenfield, Mass.) for the Cougars.
First year Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) and senior Jessica Love (Toronto, Ont.) were also double-winners for Wheaton. The pair cruised at number three doubles with an 8-1 win over Clark senior Mahek Deora (Worcester, Mass.) and first year Emma Allen. Kruse won the first set, 6-1, at fourth singles over Georgista, before winning the second set when her opponent had to retire. Kruse led 4-1 in the set. Love battled to a three-set victory at sixth singles over junior Nardin Sayoufi (Shelton, Conn.). She opened the first set with a 6-4 win, before Saoufi matched her with the reverse score in the second frame. Love came away with the triumph after a 10-8 tie-breaker in the third set.
LaCroix gained the only point for the Cougars at number two singles with a gritty effort. She downed Steinberg, 7-5, in the first set, only to have the Wheaton senior tie the match with a 6-3 win in the second set. LaCroix regrouped and outlasted her foe, 11-9, in the tie-breaker.
The Lyons will await their postseason fate with the completion of the league's schedule tomorrow.
