Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Darien Webb (Hamden, Conn.) broke the single-season record for draw controls and the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team was defeated by visiting Springfield College, 20-4, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action on Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The Lyons fall to 9-7 overall and 4-4 in league play, while the Pride improve to 11-5 and 7-1.
Wheaton also celebrated its senior class prior to the match, honoring seniors Jessica Cully (Hanover, Mass.), Mia Murray (Kennebunk, Maine), Adeline Paradis (Saco, Maine), Alexa Jalbert (Worcester, Mass.) and Webb.
Springfield dominated possession, winning 19 of 28 draws, while owning a 39-17 shot advantage.
Webb paced Wheaton with a goal and an assist to go with seven draw controls. The middie broke the Lyons' single-season record for draw controls at the 9:03 mark of the first quarter and now has 86 for the year to surpass the previous mark of 79 held by Katie Peters in 2018. Junior midfielder Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored a goal, picked up four ground balls, caused a pair of turnovers and won a draw control and junior Erin Ortega (Merrimack, N.H.) tallied a goal, three ground balls, a pair of caused turnovers and a draw control. Junior goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) stopped four of 19 shots in 38:04 of action, before yielding to classmate Emily Kelly (Norwell, Mass.) for the final 21:56 of play. Kelly turned away two of seven shots.
Martel scored all of her goals on 10 shots and added a draw control and a caused turnover for the Pride, while senior attacker Taylor Pichel (Hopkinton, Mass.) netted three goals. Senior middie Holly Rivers (Danbury, Conn.) collected three points, including a pair of goals to go with two ground balls and a caused turnover and graduate student midfielder Katie Campbell (Somers, N.Y.) came up with six draw controls. Sophomore goalie Haley Moody (Wells, Maine) made six saves for Springfield.
The Pride scored the first eight goals of the game, including all six markers in the first quarter. Pichel netted the first goal of the game at 9:03 of the opening quarter and added two more goals to match Martel's three-goal output to fuel Springfield's opening outburst.
Sophomore attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) converted a feed from first year middie Gabriella Smart (Oakland, Maine) for her 35th goal of the season at the 10:50 mark of the second quarter to put Wheaton on the board. Martel scored again for the Pride before Harvey tallied an unassisted goal for the home team with 6:19 showing on the second quarter clock to cut the deficit to 9-2.
Martel sparked a three-goal flurry before the end of the half with a score at 5:48, before first year attacker Lauren Ronai (Orange, Conn.) and classmate Lilly Vey (Foxboro, Mass.) found the back of the net in the final three minutes of the half to give the visitors a 12-2 intermission lead.
Springfield scored all five goals in the third quarter from five different players, including Martel, Rivers, Vey and graduate student midfielder Jade O'Connor (Baltimore, Md.) and sophomore midfielder Maddie Roy (Wilbraham, Mass.), to take a commanding 17-2 advantage with one quarter to play.
The Lyons scored the first and the last goals of the fourth quarter, while the Pride scored three times in between. Webb converted a free position attempt with 8:33 to go in the quarter for her 35th goal of the season. First year midfielder Abby Taylor (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) and senior attacker Anjelia Altebrando (Miller Place, N.Y.) each scored in the quarter for Springfield to go with Martel's seventh marker of the day. Ortega capped the game's scoring for Wheaton with 75 seconds left to play.
The Lyons return to action on Wednesday, April 27 when they host Emerson College at 7:00 p.m. on Nordin Field in NEWMAC play, while the Pride travel to New London, Conn. to take on United States Coast Guard Academy on the same day and time.
