WELLESLEY, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team fell to host No. 34 Wellesley College, 9-0, today at Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action in Wellesley, Mass. The Lyons fall to 5-10 overall, including 2-3 in NEWMAC play, while the Blue, who are ranked in the most recent Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, improve to 8-4 and 5-0.
Senior Miriam Galindo Cerrada (Madrid, Spain) won four games in a 6-0, 6-4 loss at number one singles at the hands of Wellesley senior Michaela Markwart (Hanover, Mass.). First year Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) was defeated at number five singles by Blue junior Celeste Tran (Los Altos, Calif.), 6-2, 6-0. Wheaton senior Alexis Acosta (Albuquerque, N.M.) was downed at second singles, 6-0, 6-1, by sophomore Annissa Mu (Saratoga, Calif.). Senior Katie Steinberg (Cumberland, Maine) and sophomore Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) were each toppled at third and fourth singles, respectively, by scores of 6-0, 6-0, by Wellesley senior Michelle Shen (Dallas, Texas) and sophomore Melinda Alviar (Indianapolis, Ind.).
Galindo Cerrada and Mueller teamed at number one doubles for the Lyons in an 8-1 loss to Mu and Alviar, while Acosta and Steinberg fell at second doubles to sophomore Cristiana DeAgazio (Winchester, Mass.) and Shen, 8-3.
Wheaton returns to the courts on Saturday, April 23 when it hosts Springfield College on the Clark Tennis Courts at 1:30 p.m., while the Blue head to Cambridge, Mass. on April 19 to take on Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 3:30 p.m.
