Women's Tennis Falls to No. 38 Babson, 9-0

BABSON PARK, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was defeated by No. 38 Babson College, 9-0, today at the Babson Tennis Courts in Babson Park, Mass. The Lyons fall to 5-9 overall and 2-2 in NEWMAC play, while the Beavers improve to 8-7 and 4-1.

Babson won all three doubles matches and swept singles play as well in straight sets.

Wheaton's best showing in doubles play came at number three with first year Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) and sophomore Zoe West (Flushing, N.Y.) in an 8-3 loss to the sophomore pair of Juliette Moschella (Little Silver, N.J.) and Shanaya Naik (Mumbai, India).

The Beavers dropped just one game in both first and second doubles to record 8-1 wins. The sophomore duo of Adèle Fernández (Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) and Jane Wang (San Diego, Calif.) defeated Lyon senior Miriam Galindo Cerrada (Madrid, Spain) and sophomore Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) at number one. Junior Morgan Mann (Newport Coast, Calif.) teamed with first year Emily Stouch (Plantation, Fla.) for a victory at second doubles over senior Katie Steinberg (Cumberland, Maine) and senior Alexis Acosta (Albuquerque, N.M.).

Steinberg won two games in a 6-2, 6-0 loss at number three singles to Wang for Babson. West also took a pair of games for Wheaton at sixth singles in a 6-2, 6-0 defeat to Mann. 

Mueller was able to win a game in each of her sets for the Lyons at number four singles in a 6-1, 6-1 defeat at the hands of Naik. Moschella dropped just one game for the Beavers in a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at first singles over Galindo Cerrada, while graduate student Runsi Patro (Woodside, N.Y.) earned a 6-1, 6-0 win for Babson at fifth singles over Kruse. Fernandez did not lose a game in a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number two singles over Acosta.

Wheaton returns to play on Saturday, April 16 when it travels to Wellesley, Mass. to take on NEWMAC foe Wellesley College in the Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse at 10:00 a.m., while the Beavers host Franklin Pierce University on April 19 at 3:00 p.m.
