Webb Leads Women's Lacrosse over Wellesley, 16-4

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Senior midfielder Darien Webb (Hamden, Conn.) tallied a career-high seven points, including three goals, to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team over host Wellesley College this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference action at Butler Stadium in Wellesley, Mass. The Lyons have won six of their last seven to improve to 6-2 and a perfect 2-0 in league play, while the Blue fall to 2-4 and 0-2.

Wheaton dominated offensive possession of the ball, outshooting Wellesley, 43-20, while forcing the Blue into 40 turnovers. The Lyons were successful on 22 of 28 clearing attempts, while holding Wellesley to just 18-34 and won 15 of 23 draws.

Webb has collected at least four points in each of her last five games and racked up six points just three days ago. She also added a game-high seven draw controls and a ground ball for Wheaton. First year midfielder Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) and sophomore middie Logan Truluck (Bath, Maine) each netted three goals apiece, while Finnie came up with four ground balls and caused a turnover. The three markers for Truluck were the first of her career to go with a ground ball in addition to a caused turnover. Junior defender Maggie Ryan (Freeport, Maine) was dominant for the Lyons, coming up with a game-high 10 ground balls and five caused turnovers. First year defender Talia Banglmaier (Kennebunk, Maine) was outstanding as well with five ground balls and four caused turnovers. Junior goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) stopped nine of 12 shots in 45:27 of action, before yielding to classmate Emily Kelly (Norwell, Mass.), who turned away one of two shots in the final 14:33 of play.

Sophomore attacker Gabrielle Shell (Upper Arlington, Ohio) led the Blue's offense with a pair of goals in addition to a ground ball. Senior goalie Lorna Li (Taunton, Mass.) made 17 saves and registered 10 ground balls. First year defender Julee Sharma (Lake Mary, Fla.) and senior midfielder Zoë Reynolds (Downers Grove, Ill.) each recorded a total of five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Wheaton scored seven of the game's first eight goals to take a 7-1 lead with 11:36 to play in the second quarter. Finnie scored the final two goals of the opening quarter after Shell had cut the Lyons' lead in half at 2-1. Wheaton led 4-1 heading into the second quarter. Webb bookended a goal from sophomore attacker Emily Laframboise (Cornwall, Vt.) with two goals of her own for the 7-1 margin. First year defender Anna Tutek (Trumbull, Conn.) found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal to pull Wellesley to within 7-2 with 10:50 showing on the second quarter clock. The Lyons tallied the final four goals of the first half, including a pair from Truluck, to take an 11-2 cushion into the intermission. 

Shell netted the first goal of the third quarter just 17 ticks into the period for the Blue to make it 11-3. Wheaton responded with the last two goals of the third quarter and the first three of the fourth quarter, including a pair of scores from sophomore attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.), to give the visitors a commanding 16-3 lead. Wellesley scored the final goal of the game when junior attacker Liz Sugg (Palermo, Maine) found senior attacker Izzy Burdick (Scarborough, Maine) with no time left on the clock for the Blue's fourth and final goal of the afternoon.

The Lyons return to play on Wednesday, March 30 when they host Worcester State University on Nordin Field at 4:00 p.m., while Wellesley hosts University of Southern Maine on the same day at the same time.
