Women's Tennis Defeated at Connecticut College, 8-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team fell to host Connecticut College, 7-2, today in New London, Conn. The Lyons fall to 2-7 on the season, while the Camels improve to 2-5.

Wheaton picked up their only point of the day at number three singles, where sophomore Zoe West (Flushing, N.Y.) and first year Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) combined to earn an 8-4 victory over the Connecticut College sophomore duo of Ella Griffiths (Concord, Mass.) and Caroline Champa (Boston, Mass.).

The Camels won the other two doubles matches and all six singles contests.

Kruse battled at fifth singles for the Lyons, taking Griffiths to three sets. Kruse dropped the first set, 6-4, before she won the middle set, 7-5. Griffiths came through with a 10-8 win in the third set to pull out the match. West also fought to a three-set defeat at sixth singles for Wheaton. Champa and West each traded 6-4 sets with West winning the second frame. Champa won the third set, 10-4, to take the match. 

Senior Miriam Galindo Cerrada (Madrid, Spain) won six games for the Lyons at number one singles in a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Conn. College's first year Caitlin Cass (Newcastle, Maine), while sophomore Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) suffered a 6-0, 6-3 loss to Camels' senior Brooke Scully (Winchester, Mass.) at fourth singles. Conn. College senior Alexis Tsang (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) was the victor at second singles with a 6-0, 6-1 decision over Wheaton senior Alexis Acosta (Albuquerque, N.M.). Lyons' senior Katie Steinberg (Cumberland, Maine) fell at third singles, 8-2, to senior Allison Falvey (Wakefield, Mass.).

Tsang and Cass paired for an 8-1 win at number one doubles over Galindo Cerrada and Mueller, while Scully and Falvey combined for an 8-2 triumph at second doubles over Acosta and Steinberg.

Wheaton returns to action on Sunday, March 27 when it hosts Colby-Sawyer College at 12:00 p.m. on the Clark Tennis Courts, while the Camels travel to Amherst, Mass. to play Amherst College on March 26 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference opener.
