Women's Lacrosse Edged by Framingham State, 11-10

NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team was defeated by visiting Framingham State University, 11-10, this evening at Nordin Field on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass. The Lyons' five-game win streak comes to an end as they fall to 5-2, while the Rams improve to 3-3.

Wheaton owned a 34-24 shot advantage and a 37-19 margin on ground balls, while holding Framingham State to just a 16-28 success rate on the clear, including just 6-16 in the first half. 

Senior midfielder Darien Webb (Hamden, Conn.) tallied a career and game-high six points with five goals and an assist to go with two ground balls and five draw controls to lead the Lyons. Sophomore attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) and first year midfielder Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) each netted a pair of goals. LeBeau also added four ground balls, three draw controls and a caused turnover, while Finnie picked up three ground balls. Junior midfielder Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) came up with five draw controls, scored a goal, assisted on another, picked up four ground balls and caused a turnover. Junior goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) stopped five shots for the home team.

Sophomore attacker Hannah Guerin (Cumberland, R.I.) scored four goals on seven shots and added a ground ball for Framingham State, while senior attacker Tara Palermo (Mashpee, Mass.) tallied a pair of goals to go with an assist and a ground ball. First year attacker Leah Green (Chelmsford, Mass.) netted two goals. First year midfielder Kate Simpson (Littleton, Mass.) paced the defense on the field with a game-high five ground balls in addition to a pair of caused turnovers and three draw controls and junior goalie Alexis Burleigh (Vernon, Conn.) was outstanding in net for Framingham State with a career-high 16 saves.

Wheaton ended the third quarter with a 9-6 lead, before Framingham State scored four unanswered goals to take a 10-9 lead. Green and sophomore middie Regan Fein (North Attleboro, Mass.) each scored in a span of 36 seconds to pull the Rams to within 9-8 with 13:21 left in the fourth quarter. Guerin found the back of the net at the 11:12 mark and scored again, with Framingham State down a player due to penalty, with 7:32 showing on the fourth quarter clock to take a 10-9 edge for just its second lead of the game. Webb answered for the Lyons with 5:03 to go in the quarter to pull them even at 10-10.

The Rams took the lead for good at 2:47 when first year attacker Hailey Baker (Peabody, Mass.) possessed the ball behind the net and found Green in front for a score with Wheaton down a player due to a green card.

The Lyons looked to knot the score with 73 seconds left in the game on their final possession, but Simpson intercepted a long outlet pass near midfield to give Framingham State the ball for the final 64 ticks on the clock to secure the win as it ran out the clock.

Wheaton scored the only two goals of the first quarter with one each from Webb and Finnie and tallied three of the first four goals as Palermo and Finnie traded goals to set the Lyons up with a 3-1 lead with 13:56 to play in the second quarter. Palermo and Guerin sandwiched a goal each around a Webb score to pull the Rams to within 4-3 at halftime.

Guerin and junior attacker Madison Skiff (Granby, Conn.) each scored to open the second half for Framingham State and give the Rams a 5-4 margin with 8:25 remaining in the third quarter.

Wheaton's offense went to work, scoring four straight goals in a span of 2:22, including a pair of markers from Webb and single scores from Harvey and LeBeau to give the Lyons an 8-5 lead. Simpson and LeBeau traded goals to end the quarter with Wheaton holding a 9-6 advantage.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, March 26 when they travel to Wellesley, Mass. to take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Wellesley College at 12:00 p.m., while the Rams host Endicott College on the same day and time.
