ORANGE, Calif. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's tennis team was blanked by host Chapman University this afternoon, 9-0, at the Lastinger Tennis Center in Orange, Calif. The Lyons fall to 2-6 on the season, while the Panthers improve to 5-3.
Senior Katie Steinberg (Cumberland, Maine) and sophomore Mareike Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) won two games in an 8-2 match loss at number two doubles to Chapman first year duo Lucy Erickson (Portland, Ore.) and Alexis Golin. The Panthers won the other two doubles contests by a count of 8-1. Wheaton seniors Miriam Galindo Cerrada (Madrid, Spain) and Alexis Acosta (Albuquerque, N.M.) fell to sophomore Olivia Desso (Evergreen, Colo.) and junior Aliya Allyn (Los Angeles, Calif.) at number one doubles, 8-1, while sophomore Zoe West (Flushing, N.Y.) and first year Izzy Kruse (Woodstock, Ga.) combined in an 8-0 loss at third doubles to the Panthers' combo of sophmore Racquel Fhima (Minneapolis, Minn.) and first year Goldie La.
Cerrada lost in straight sets at first singles to Allyn, 6-1, 6-1, while Mueller took two games off Desso at fourth singles in a 6-1, 6-1 defeat. Kruse was defeated at fifth singles, 6-0, 6-1 by Erickson. Acosta and Steinberg were unable to break through at second and third singles, respectively. Acosta lost to La, 6-0, 6-0, and Steinberg lost by the same score against Golin. West fell in straight sets at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0, to Chapman sophomore Katherine Monroy (Santa Barbara, Calif.).
The Lyons return to the courts on Thursday, March 24 when they head to New London, Conn. to take on Connecticut College at 4:00 p.m., while the Panthers host Middlebury College on March 20 at 1:00 p.m. EDT.
