Box Score BRIDGEWATER, Mass. -- First year midfielder Lara Finnie (Westfield, Mass.) tallied a career-high five goals to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's lacrosse team over host Bridgewater State University, 17-8, this evening at Swenson Field in Bridgewater, Mass. The Lyons have now won four straight for their longest win streak since the 2015 campaign when they won seven consecutive games from March 18 to April 8. They improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Bears fall to 2-4.
Wheaton dominated the offensive opportunities with a 42-17 shot advantage to give the Lyons 42 or more shots in each of their last three games and 16 or more goals during that same span. The Lyons also controlled the draw by a count of 19-10.
Finnie was efficient, needing just eight shots to net all of her goals for Wheaton. Junior midfielder Brooke Harvey (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) was outstanding on both sides of the field for the Lyons, racking up five points on four goals and an assist in addition to picking up four ground balls and causing a pair of turnovers. Junior attacker Jessie Kilburn (North Branford, Conn.) also had a big offensive night with a game-high six points on three goals and three assists to go with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Senior defender Mia Murray (Kennebunk, Maine) contributed with a game-high three caused turnovers and added a pair of ground balls. Junior goalie Emily Oundjian (Longmeadow, Mass.) made six saves to earn the win.
First year attacker Nina Liquori (Agawam, Mass.), senior defender Delaney Langton (Scituate, R.I.) and senior attacker Lindsay Brown (East Longmeadow, Mass.) each netted a pair of goals to pace the Bridgewater State offense. Langton also added a game-high seven ground balls to go with a pair of caused turnovers, while Liquori recorded two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Laura Giovaniello (Walpole, Mass.) turned away six of 17 shots she faced in 31:58 of action, before yielding to junior Olivia Kerrigan (Braintree, Mass.), whole stopped 10 of 16 shots in the final 28:02 of play.
Wheaton took control right away, scoring the first five goals of the night as part of an 8-2 run to open the match. Finnie scored three times and Harvey twice to give the Lyons a 5-0 lead, before Langton scored with 99 seconds left in the quarter to put the Bears on the board. Wheaton sophomore attacker Avonlea LeBeau (North Branford, Conn.) and Liquori traded goals to open the second quarter before Harvey and Kilburn each found the back of the net for an 8-2 advantage with 8:44 showing on the second quarter clock. Bridgewater State scored two of the final three goals of the half to cut the deficit to 9-4 at the intermission. Langton and sophomore attacker Savannah Herrington (Kinnelon, N.J.) scored a goal apiece for the home team in the finals minutes of the quarter.
The Lyons scored five of the first six goals of the third quarter to take their largest lead of the game at 14-5 with 4:51 to go in the quarter. Kilburn paced the burst with a pair of goals. Brown scored the final two goals of the period to pull the Bears to within 14-7 at the end of three quarters.
Wheaton tallied three of the final four goals of the evening, including scores from Finnie, Webb and senior midfielder Darien Webb (Hamden, Conn.).
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, March 19 when they open the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference slate vs. Clark University at Nordin Field at 1:00 p.m., while Bridgewater State hosts University of Southern Maine on the same day at 1:00 p.m.
