Men's Basketball Falls Short to Trinity (Conn.), 73-69

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. -- Senior forward Aaron Williams (Springfield, Mass.) scored game-high 30 points to give him 72 in his last two games, but it wasn't enough as the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's basketball team fell short to visiting Trinity College (Conn.), 73-69, this afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons fall to 3-4 on the season, while the Bantams win their seventh straight game to remain a perfect 7-0 for their best start since 2003-04 when they won the first 14 games of season.

Trinity committed just six turnovers and saw four players score double-digits. The visitors struggled from three-point range, shooting just 15.4% (2-13), but outscored Wheaton, 52-22, in the paint to spell the difference in the game.

Williams was 12-19 shooting, while adding eight rebounds and three blocked shots to lead the Lyons. Senior guard Alex Carlisle (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.) scored 14 points and added five assists and two rebounds, while sophomore guard Ty Murphy (Dedham, Mass.) hit four three-pointers as part of a 12-point effort in addition to four rebounds and an assist. First year forward Eoin Morrissey (Watertown, Mass.) ripped down a career-high 12 rebounds, including five on the offensive glass and added five assists and two points.

Junior forwards Gilbert Otoo (Burtonsville, Md.) and Ben Callahan-Gold (New York, N.Y.) each netted 12 points to lead the Bantams. Otoo was 6-10 from the floor and added three rebounds and an assist, while Callahan-Gold grabbed two boards, came up with two steals, blocked a shot and handed out an assist. Sophomore guard Will Dorion (Needham, Mass.) contributed with 10 points, six rebounds, two assists and a steal and senior guard C.J. Redd (Peekskill, N.Y.) dropped in 10 points to go with three rebounds and an assist.

Murphy drained a three-pointer to pull Wheaton even at 67-67 with 3:06 to play in the game. Neither team was able to score over the next 101 seconds, before Callahan-Gold converted back-to-back layups to give Trinity a 71-67 lead with 24 ticks left in the game to secure the victory. Senior guard Evan Cook (Dunstable, Mass.) made a layup with 12 seconds left to cut the deficit to 71-69 for Wheaton, but Dorion converted a pair of free throws to seal the game for the visitors.

First year guard Henry Vetter (Kenilworth, Ill.) hit a free throw with 14:22 left in the opening half to cut the deficit to 14-10 for the Bantams. The Lyons scored six of the next eight points on three-pointers from senior guard Marckenley Lima (Roslindale, Mass.) and Carlisle, to give Wheaton its largest lead of the day at 20-12 with 12 minutes to play in the opening stanza.

Trinity put together a 19-5 stretch over the next nine-plus minutes, paced by six points from Vetter, to take a 31-25 margin with 2:44 to play in the half.

Williams drilled a three-pointer with 1:38 showing on the first half clock to bring the Lyons to within 31-28 before the teams headed to the intermission.

Redd made a layup to give the Bantams a 33-28 lead just 36 seconds into the second half, before Wheaton went on a 12-2 blitz, fueled by a pair of Murphy trifectas, to give the home team a 40-35 lead with 16:53 remaining in the second half.

The Lyons maintained a 47-42 advantage with 15:39 showing, but Trinity went on a 10-3 burst, capped by a layup from Dorion, to give the Bantams a 52-50 lead at 12:06 of the half. The teams traded the lead six times before Otoo made a layup to cap seven unanswered points from Trinity and extend its lead to 63-57 with 8:03 to go in the game.

Wheaton put together a 10-4 stretch, including the three-ball from Murphy, to knot the game at 67-67.

The Lyons return to the court on Monday, December 5 when they host Eastern Nazarene College at 7:00 p.m. at Emerson Gymnasium, while Trinity hosts Anna Maria College on the same night at 7:30 p.m.
