Box Score LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's basketball team defeated host Northern Vermont University-Lyndon, 85-57, to give Head Coach Brian Walmsley his 300th career victory with the Lyons this afternoon at George W. Stannard Gymnasium in Lyndon, Vt.
The Lyons improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Hornets fall to 2-3.
Walmsley is the only Head Coach in Wheaton Men's Basketball program history to amass as many as 300 career wins.
The Lyons shot 55.9% (33-59) from the floor, including a first half that saw them convert 66.7% (20-30) of their field goal tries. Wheaton owned a decisive 43-29 rebounding advantage and held Lyndon to just 35% (21-60) shooting.
Wheaton senior guard Evan Cook (Dunstable, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points on 7-12 from the field to go with two rebounds, an assists and three steals, while senior forward Aaron Williams (Springfield, Mass.) came off the bench to score 16 points on 5-6 shooting to go with four rebounds in just 12 minutes. Senior guard Alex Carlisle (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.) scored 13 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished for six assists, picked up a steal and blocked a shot and first year forward Eoin Morrissey (Watertown, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points on 4-5 from the floor to go with eight rebounds and two assists.
Senior guard Antonio Carlisle (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) led the Hornets with 17 points and added three steals and an assist in the first meeting between he and his Brother, Alex, on the same collegiate court. Jaden Phillips contributed with seven points, four rebounds and three blocks and Gregory Gonyea Jr. scored seven points in addition to three assists, a rebound and a steal.
The Lyons never trailed in the game and scored the first six points of the afternoon as part of a 12-4 opening run within the first five and half minutes of play. Antonio Carlisle knocked down a jumper at the 12:44 mark of the opening stanza to cut the deficit to 15-10 for Lyndon, but Wheaton responded with nine straight points and an 11-1 stretch to take a 26-11 advantage with 9:22 left in the first half.
Carlisle hit another jumper for the home team to pull the Hornets to within 28-20 with 5:43 showing on the first half clock. The Lyons followed their earlier trend and came back with a purpose, scoring 12 of the next 13 points, including five points each from Cook and Williams, to increase their lead to 40-21 with 2:23 to go in the half. Wheaton owned a 45-26 cushion at halftime.
Junior guard Tyrese Harris (Fort Benning, Ga.) kept Lyndon to within 61-45 after making a layup at the 9:35 mark of the second half, but it was as close as the Hornets would get the rest of the way. Cook sparked a 14-2 run with five points to give the Lyons their largest lead of the day at 75-47 with 5:23 remaining in the contest.
Lyndon put together one last surge with a 10-4 burst to close to within 79-57, but Wheaton scored the final six points.
The Lyons return to action on Tuesday, November 22 when they travel to Bristol, R.I. to take on Roger Williams University at 5:00 p.m., while the Hornets host Norwich University on November 29 at 5:00 p.m.
