Box Score WENHAM, Mass. -- First year guard Kiki Walters (Fleetwood, Pa.) scored 19 points to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's basketball team in a 71-52 loss to host Gordon College this evening in the first round of the Gordon Classic at the Bennett Center in Wenham, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 1-1 on the season, while the Fighting Scots improve to 1-1.
Walters was 5-8 from the floor, including 2-2 from three-point range and was also 7-8 from the free throw line for Wheaton. She added 10 rebounds for her first collegiate double-double and three steals and two assists. First year forward Regan Keyter (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) contributed with nine points on 3-6 from the floor in addition to two rebounds and a block. Sophomore guard Abby Fernandes (Assonet, Mass.) netted eight points, pulled down seven boards, handed out five assists, came up with a pair of steals and blocked a shot.
Sophomore guard Isabella Rivera (Concord, N.H.) led Gordon with 16 points on 7-13 shooting and added three assists, two rebounds and four steals, while senior guard Serianna Anderson (Newcastle, Wash.) registered a double-double of 15 points and 11 boards to go with four assists and three steals. Senior forward Madison Wynbeek (North Haledon, N.J.) scored 15 points on 5-10 from the floor in addition to four rebounds an assist and a steal and sophomore guard Ami Rivera (Concord, N.H.) chipped in with 13 points, six assists, five rebounds and four steals.
Keyter converted a pair of free throws to give the Lyons an 8-4 lead with 6:48 to play in the opening quarter. The Fighting Scots went on an 11-2 run to take a 15-10 lead, fuled by five points from Anderson. The home team led 16-12 at the end of the quarter.
First year forward Catherine Penick (Bedford, N.H.) made a layup for Wheaton to pull it to within 24-23 with 4:57 showing in the first quarter. Gordon scored the next four points to take a 28-23 lead before going into the end of the quarter with a 32-28 margin.
The Fighting Scots put together a 16-6 stretch to begin the second quarter and take a 48-34 advantage with 4:59 to go in the third quarter. The Lyons fought back wtih a 10-3 run to pull them to within 51-44 with 1:18 showing on the second quarter clock.
Fernandes sunk a free throw for Wheaton to pull it to within 55-47 with 6:47 to play in the game. Rivera scored seven points as part of a 14-3 burst to give Gordon a 69-50 lead with 2:41 remaining in the game.
The Lyons return to the court tomorrow when they take on Eastern Nazarene College at 1:00 p.m., while the Fighting Scots host Saint Joseph's College (Maine) at 3:00 p.m.
