Women's Soccer Edged 3-2 in Heartbreaking Double Overtime Loss to Emerson in NEWMAC Quarters

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. – The sixth-seeded Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team was edged, 3-2, in double-overtime by host number three seed Emerson College this evening in the Quarterfinal Round of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Championship Tournament at Rotch Field in Boston, Mass.

The Lyons finish the season with a 7-9-2 record, while the Lions improve to 10-3-5 and advance to play second-seeded Babson College on November 5 in the NEWMAC Semifinals at 3:00 p.m. in Babson Park, Mass. The game featured two overtimes that would be played to completion in a rule-change that was made prior to the season.

Emerson scored a pair of goals in the final 43 seconds of the second overtime, in a span of 32 seconds, to spell the difference in the match.

The Lions tied the game at 2-2 when a shot was fired off a Wheaton defender in the right post, before junior midfielder Simone Barragan-Shaw (San Francisco, Calif.) picked up the rebound and fired a shot inside the far left post for her fifth season goal with 43 ticks left in the second overtime. With time winding down graduate student forward Caitlin Johnston (Phoenix, Ariz.) intercepted a clearing pass in the Lyons' defensive zone, carried the ball inside the box to draw the keeper out and then flicked a shot inside the far right post with just 11 seconds remaining in the game.

Wheaton junior midfielder Gaby Diaz (Lynn, Mass.) intercepted a pass in the Emerson defensive zone before playing give-and-go with senior defender Nicolette Scinicariello (Douglas, Mass.). Scinicariello brought the ball just outside of the top of the box, before shooting a cross to first year forward Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.), who fired a shot from the right side of the box that went off the keeper's hands. Sophomore forward Lily Brown (Warwick, R.I.) was there for the rebound for her fourth goal of the year to give the Lyons a 2-1 lead with 4:29 gone in the first overtime.

Wheaton's lead was improbable at the time, given that Emerson outshot them in the game, 33-4, including 8-1 in both overtime periods combined. The Lions also owned a 10-1 margin on corner kicks.

Emerson cracked the scoring column in the 19th minute of play to take a 1-0 lead. Senior midfielder Ainslee MacQuarrie (Kensington, N.H.) dribbled the ball down the left side, before sending a cross to the front of the goalmouth, where Johnston beat the keeper to the ball and put the ball in the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

The Lyons knotted the score at 1-1 with just 12:01 left in the second half. Senior forward Sadie Recht (Los Angeles, Calif.) closed in on the Lion keeper as she tried the clear the ball out with her foot, but Recht blocked it, collected the ball and lofted a shot over the keeper and into the back of the net for her team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 78th minute of play.

First year keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) finished the game with 11 saves for Wheaton, while sophomore goalie Amara Schaub (Torrance, Calif.) stopped a pair of shots for Emerson.
