Box Score NORTON, Mass. — Junior forward Anda Brown (South Woodstock, Vt.) scored with 90 seconds left in overtime to give the Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over visiting Clark University this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Nordin Field on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 3-9 overall and 1-3 in NEWMAC play, while the Cougars fall to 5-7 and 1-4.
Junior midfielder Mackenzie Yates (Brownsville, Vt.) weaved her way through a pair of Clark defenders at midfield with sophomore midfielder Delia Knox (Cumberland, Maine) running ahead of her on the left and Brown on her right in a three-on-one for Wheaton. Yates sent a cross to Knox, who made her way to the goal-mouth to draw the Cougar goalie out before Knox slipped a cross to Brown in the right slot for the game-winning tally and her second marker of the season for the win.
The goal capped three unanswered scores for the Lyons to erase a 2-0 deficit and complete the comeback.
Wheaton managed the only two shots of the extra period to give the home team a 12-11 edge in shots. Each team registered four penalty corners for the match.
Clark got on the board first with 39 seconds left in the opening quarter when junior forward Greer McCarty (White River Junction, Vt.) picked up a loose ball from five yards out and fired a shot to the left side of the cage for a 1-0 edge.
The Cougars doubled their lead midway through the second quarter with McCarty striking again for her team-leading seventh goal of the season. Senior forward Abbe Cravinho (Bellows Falls, Vt.) found first year forward Ciaran Cubbage (Fredericksburg, Va.) at the top of the circle, who sent a cross to McCarty inside the circle for a quick shot that eluded the Lyons goalie with 7:27 left in the second quarter.
Wheaton was finally able to steal some of the momentum away from Clark just over three minutes later when it scored on a penalty corner with 4:12 remaining in the first half. Yates set up sophomore midfielder Macey Poitras-Cote (Northborough, Mass.) for her third goal of the year with a cross to the left slot that Poitras-Cote buried to cut the deficit in half for the Lyons.
The Cougars held a 2-1 edge heading into the intermission and owned a 7-2 margin on shots, before the match seemed to dramatically shift to Wheaton in the second half.
Sophomore midfielder Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine) gathered a loose ball just inside the top of the circle, where she blasted a shot into the back of the cage for her second tally of the season just 3:50 into the fourth quarter. The goal pulled the Lyons even at 2-2 and was the last of regulation to set up the overtime session.
Junior keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) made seven saves for Wheaton, while first year goalie Loren Root (Sherborn, Mass.) stopped seven shots for Clark.
The Lyons return to action tomorrow when they host University of New England on Nordin Field at Noon, while the Cougars travel to Dudley, Mass. to take on Nichols College on October 11 at 7:00 p.m.
