Recht Leads Women's Soccer over WPI, 3-1

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior forward Sadie Recht (Los Angeles, Calif.) set up a goal and tallied another to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team over host Worcester Polytechnic Institute, 3-1, this evening in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play on H. Carr Field in Worcester, Mass.

The Lyons improve to 5-5-1 overall and 2-2 in league play, while the Engineers fall to 4-6-1 and 0-3-1.

Despite WPI dominating the shot column by a count of 26-8, Wheaton scored three times to come away with the win. The Engineers also owned a 6-0 margin in corner kicks over the Lyons.

Recht sent a thru-ball to first year midfielder Raquel Garces (Somerset, N.J.), who drew the keeper out into the box, before she fired a low shot into the left side of the net for her first collegiate marker. The goal gave Wheaton a 1-0 edge in the 12th minute of play.

WPI looked to notch the equalizer just over three minutes later, but senior midfielder Josie Kim's (San Jose, Calif.) shot hit the crossbar to deny her the score.

Recht later gave the Lyons an insurance goal when the keeper came up near the top of the box, but Recht beat her to the ball and lofted a shot over her head and into the back of the net for her third goal of the season. Junior midfielder Makenzie Paulo (West Springfield, Mass.) was credited with the assist on the play. Wheaton went into the intermission with a 3-0 advantage following the goal that came with 9:03 left in the opening half.

The Lyons' second goal came on an own goal when first year forward Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) sent a cross from the right side to just outside of the Engineer keeper's reach, but the momentum of a WPI player carried them into the ball to deflect it into the back of the net with exactly 19 minutes to play in the half.

The Engineers got on the board in the 59th minute of the second half to cut the deficit to 3-1. Sophomore back Lottie McLeod (Newton, Mass.) looked to be thwarted by a Wheaton defender near the top of the box, but she played the ball back to senior midfielder Grace Casey (Winchester, Mass.), who unleashed a wicked shot inside the far left post for her first goal of the year.

First year keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) made a career-high 12 saves for Wheaton. Senior goalie Kelsey Leach (Tolland, Conn.) turned away three of six shots she faced in the opening 46:25 for WPI, before yielding to junior Lili Hellerman (Ashland, Mass.), who stopped both shots she faced.

The Lyons return to action again on Saturday, October 8 when they travel to South Hadley, Mass. to take on NEWMAC foe Mount Holyoke College at 12:00 p.m., while the Engineers head to Wellesley, Mass. to play league rival Wellesley College on the same day and time.
