Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – Six different players scored for the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team in a 6-0 rout over host Clark University this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Granger Field in Worcester, Mass.
The Lyons are now unbeaten in nine of their last 10 matches and improve to 8-4-6 overall and 2-2-3 in NEWMAC play. Wheaton secures the number five seed in the NEWMAC Championship Tournament and will travel to Worcester, Mass. on Tuesday, November 1 to take on fourth-seeded Worcester Polytechnic Institute. The Cougars end their season at 2-14-1 and 0-7.
The Lyons dominated from start to finish with a 29-2 shot advantage, including all 18 shots of an opening half that saw them score five times. Wheaton also held a 5-1 margin on corner kicks. Six different players scored a goal for the Lyons for their highest number since seven players tallied at least one goal in a 7-0 victory over Keene State College on September 6, 2014.
Wheaton has registered four straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in its last 364:36 of play.
The Lyons needed just 5:02 to crack the scoring column to take a 1-0 edge. Sophomore defender Ethan Alfano (East Greenwich, R.I.) netted his first collegiate goal when he lifted a long chip shot from the right sideline and into the far left post just out of the outstretched Clark keeper.
Sophomore forward Alasdair Ferrier (Concord, N.H.) followed with his league-leading 13th goal of the season when he carried the ball into the box and fired a shot that went off the Cougar keeper's hands and into the back of the net in the ninth minute of play. The marker puts him 10th on Wheaton's all-time single-season list for goals.
The Lyons added two more goals in a span of 110 seconds to increase their lead to 4-0. Senior midfielder Jack Brusso (Pawtucket, R.I.) collected the rebound off a shot from junior Jon DiDario (Scotch Plains, N.J.) and fired a shot into the back of the net for his third goal of the season in the 30th minute of play. First year defender Leao Nelson (Bar Harbor, Maine) played the ball to first year midfielder Baden McLaughlin (Yarmouth, Maine), who sent it back to Nelson for a shot that curved inside the far right post for his first career tally in the 32nd minute of play. The helper was the first collegiate point for McLaughlin.
Wheaton added its fifth goal with just 22 seconds left in the first half. Sophomore midfielder Connor Cushing (Eastham, Mass.) played the ball back to DiDario, who unleashed a shot from 30 yards out that pinballed off the right post and over the goal line for his first collegiate goal and Cushing's first career point.
The Lyons capped the scoring when first year midfielder Daniel Medina (Yonkers, N.Y.) beat a number of defenders to his left before ripping a shot into the far left post for his first collegiate goal with 6:52 remaining in the match.
Junior forward Teddy Donahue (Georgetown, Mass.) and sophomore forward Tyler Manley (New Rochelle, N.Y.) each attempted a shot for Clark.
Senior keeper Cam Millington (Fairfield, Conn.) was untested for Wheaton to record his sixth career shutout, while first year goalie Diego Marin (Guaynabo, P.R.) stopped four of nine shots in the first half of play, before yielding to junior goalie Andrew DiStefano (West Chester, Pa.), who turned away four of five shots in the second stanza.
