Box Score FRAMINGHAM, Mass. — Five different players scored to fuel a 5-0 victory for the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team over host Framingham State University today at Maple Street Field in Framingham, Mass.
The Lyons improve to 7-4-6 on the season, while the Rams fall to 10-5-2. The goal total was the highest for Wheaton since a 6-2 victory over Dean College on August 31, 2018.
Wheaton dominated the first half with a 13-1 shot advantage, but was only able to get one on the board before making their shots count in the second half, scoring four times on nine shots. The Lyons held a 22-7 shot margin for the game and were awarded nine corner kicks to their host's total of three.
Wheaton cracked the scoring column early, scoring just 6:04 into the match to take a 1-0 edge.
Senior midfielder Charlie Stringer (Medford, Ore.) stepped hard to the ball at midfield to take it away from Framingham State and zipped a thru-ball ahead of sophomore forward Alasdair Ferrier (Concord, N.H.), who beat the keeper to it and sent a shot into the right side of the net for his team-leading 12th goal of the season in the seventh minute of play.
Wheaton doubled its lead in the 52nd minute of play to take a 2-0 lead. Sophomore back Ethan Alfano (East Greenwich, R.I.) tossed a throw-in from the lower left sideline into the box, where junior midfielder Robert Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) redirected it with a header the front of the goal-mouth, finding the head of first year forward Ethan Thompson (Norwell, Mass.) for a shot into the back of the net and his second tally of the year.
First year midfielder Joey Everett (Danbury, Conn.) fed a cross down the left sideline to senior midfielder Max Strong (Littleton, Mass.), who collected the ball and sent a shot past the Framingham keeper and into the far right post for his first collegiate goal in the 67th minute to give the Lyons a 3-0 lead.
Everett picked up his second assist of the day on Wheaton's fourth marker just over three minutes later. He sent a corner kick on a line to the front of the net, where junior defender Angus Stringer (Medford, Ore.) got up for a header that resulted in his first collegiate marker in the 70th minute of play.
The Lyons capped the scoring with their fifth tally coming with just 2:04 left to play in the match. Sophomore midfielder Lucas Goettel (Cumberland, Maine) converted a penalty kick into the right side of the net for his first career goal as well to give the visitors a 5-0 cushion.
Sophomore forward Gabriel Padilla (Bellingham, Mass.) attempted two shots for the Rams, including one on net.
First year keeper Michael O'Gara (Ardmore, Pa.) stopped all four shots he faced in the first 76:55 of play, before yielding to sophomore goalie Chris Housel (Essex Fells, N.J.), who was untested in the final 13:05 to combine for Wheaton's seventh shutout of the season. Sophomore netminder Joseph Sturzo (Lowell, Mass.) recorded seven saves for Framingham State.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, October 29 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference rival Clark University at 2:00 p.m., while the Rams close out the regular season hosting Fitchburg State University on the same day at the same time.
