Women's Soccer Edged by Clark, 1-0

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. —  The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team was edged by visiting Clark University, 1-0, this afternoon in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Mirrione Stadium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.

The Lyons slip to 7-8-1 overall and 4-5-0 conference play, while the Cougars extend their unbeaten streak to nine straight games (7-0-2) and improve to 9-4-2 and 5-1-2.

Clark controlled possession for the majority of the match with a 29-10 shot advantage.

First year forward Gabriella Herivaux (Canton, Mass.) netted the only goal of the match for the visitors.

Despite the Cougars offensive showing, Wheaton's defense was able to limit them to just the one goal, while holding them without a score for the final 80:58 of play.

Clark played the ball to the upper front left corner of the box to where the Lyon keeper came out to meet the ball, but she was obstructed from getting to the ball before it slipped behind her in the box. Herivaux was in the right place at the right time during a scrum in front of the box and was able to punch the ball into an empty net for the game's lone score with 9:02 gone in the match.

The Lyons looked for the equalizer in the 29th minute. First year forward Kate Wickenheisser (Oxford, Conn.) was able to get behind a ball sent ahead of her on a breakaway and went one-on-one with sophomore Cougar keeper Anabella White (Manhattan Beach, Calif.), but was unable to get off a clean shot as the White was able to smother the ball at the end of the charge.

Wheaton had a pair of free kick opportunities at the top of the box, but junior midfielder Makenzie Paulo (West Springfield, Mass.) was unable to get a shot to break through for a score.

Clark also experienced a pair of near misses with Herivaux and senior defender Emma Tziachris (Cumberland, R.I.) each catching too much of the crossbar on their respective shots.

First year keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) was tested often by the Cougar offense but responded with 12 shots to post her fourth outing of double-digit saves for the Lyons. White recorded three saves for Clark to turn in her ninth shutout of the season.

Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, October 26 when it hosts NEWMAC rival Wellesley College at Mirrione Stadium for a 3:00 p.m. kickoff, while the Cougars host Springfield College on the same day at 7:00 p.m.
