Box Score NORTON, Mass. — Sophomore forward Mo Faye (Kaolack, Senegal) tallied his first collegiate goal to help the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team secure a 2-2 tie with visiting Williams College this afternoon on Keefe Field on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons now stand at 5-3-5 to set a school standard for ties in a season, while the Ephs are now 4-1-6 and have registered their highest total for ties since at least 1982. It was the first match between the schools since 2010.
Wheaton controlled the first half with a 7-2 shot advantage, but was unable to capitalize on its chances. The Lyons finished the match with a 15-7 margin and held a 3-2 edge on corner kicks.
Following a free kick from midfield, Williams junior forward Dan Rayhill (New Hartford, N.Y.) collected a loose ball just inside the top of the 18-box and fired a laser into the bottom right corner of the net to knot the match at 2-2 with 9:13 left in the game.
The Ephs tallied the first marker of the contest in the 31st minute to take a 1-0 edge. Senior midfielder Jake Saudek (Baltimore, Md.) collected the ball at the top of the box and bumped a cross to first year forward Sam Gibson (Chicago, Ill.), who blasted a shot from the right side and into the far left corner for his second goal of the season.
Wheaton cracked the scoring column in the 62nd minute to tie the match at 1-1. Senior midfielder Jack Brusso (Pawtucket, R.I.) played the ball ahead to junior midfielder Robert Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) within the box, before Lloyd played it back to Brusso, who unleashed a left-footed strike into the left side of the net.
The Lyons took the lead in the 76th minute on Faye's first collegiate goal. Sophomore defender Ethan Alfano (East Greenwich, R.I.) launched a throw-in from the left sideline that Lloyd redirected with a header on a line to the front of the left post, where Faye was camped for the goal and a 2-1 lead.
Senior goalie Cam Millington (Fairfield, Conn.) made three saves for Wheaton, while junior keeper Ben Diffley (Summerville, S.C.) stopped three shots for Williams.
The Lyons head to Cambridge, Mass. on Saturday, October 15 to take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference rival Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 7:00 p.m. The Ephs return to play on the same day when they travel to Middletown, Conn. to play New England Small College Athletic Conference foe Wesleyan University at 3:00 p.m.
