Box Score Norton, Mass. - The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team was defeated by Smith College, 2-1, as a result of penalty strokes following two scoreless overtime periods this afternoon at a rainy Nordin Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 2-8 overall and 0-2 in league play, while the Pioneers improve to 5-5 and 2-1.
Junior Karlie Guimond (Hatfield, Mass.) and junior Laura Dreher (Durham, N.H.) each recorded successful strokes for Smith ito give the visitors the winning margin. Sophomore midfielder Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine) broke through for the Lyons but it wasn't enough for Wheaton.
Smith took an early lead when first year Annika Peterson (Forest Hill, MD) scored on a breakaway just 4:15 into the first quarter.
The Pioneers owned a decisive 29-10 shot advantage, including 7-5 in the second quarter. That didn't stop the Lyons when senior forward Sophie Shekarchi (Jamestown, R.I) scored her team-high fifth goal of the season off a rebounded save with less than two minutes remaining in the 2nd quarter to tie the game at 1-1.
Wheaton's defense was outstanding, holding the Pioneers scoreless for the final 30:00 of regulation and in double overtime to amount to a total of 65:45 of scoreless defense for the home team.
Junior keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) made a career-high 19 saves for the Lyons, while sophomore goalie Rory Harper (Wayne, Penn.) stopped six shots for the Pioneers.
Wheaton returns to action on Tuesday, October 4 when it travels to Springfield College in Springfield, Mass for New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play at 7:00 p.m., while the Pioneers travel to Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday October 4 at 7:00 p.m.
