Box Score Norton, Mass. – The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team was defeated by No. 17 Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 4-0, in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play this afternoon at a rain-soaked Mirrione Stadium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass.
The Lyons fall to 4-5-1 overall and dip to 1-2-0 in league play, while the Engineers improve to 8-2-1 and 3-0-0.
MIT outshot Wheaton, 31-4, and held a 9-0 margin on corner kicks.
The contest remained scoreless until the 53rd minute when sophomore Ashley English (Sheboygan, Wis.) unleashed a shot from outside of the box on a cross from junior teammate Meagan Rowlett (Dana Point, Calif.) to get the Engineers on the board, 1-0.
MIT scored three times in the final 10 minutes of the contest with the first strike coming in the 79th minute as senior Ceci Munoz (Maplewood, N.J.) deposited a shot into the right side to make it 2-0. Rowlett factored into the second goal after taking a pass from the right side from graduate student teammate Karenna Groff (Weston, Mass.) and scoring her sixth marker of the year. Groff matched Rowlett with a three-point outing after recording her fifth goal of the season on a strike from the top of the box with just three ticks left on the clock before the final horn sounded to give MIT its fourth goal of the afternoon.
Wheaton first year keeper Patricia Bandrup (Poway, Calif.) stopped 11 of 15 shots in 90:00 minutes of play, while senior Lauren Castle (Ridgefield, Conn.) made one save for the Engineers.
The Lyons return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 5 when they travel to Worcester Polytechnic Institute for a 7:00 p.m. NEWMAC match, while MIT hosts Babson College on the same day for a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
