Box Score BEVERLY, Mass. -- The Wheaton College men's soccer team scored three unanswered goals to break a 1-1 tie and take a 4-1 victory over host Endicott College this afternoon at Hempstead Stadium in Beverly, Mass. The Lyons have won their last two matches and improve to 2-1-0, while the Gulls fall to 0-1-1.
Senior forward Luca De Castro Novaes (Scarsdale, N.Y.) contributed to a pair of goals for Wheaton with a goal and an assist to record the first three-point effort of his career.
Sophomore defender Ryan Bell (Wayne, Pa.) made his first collegiate marker a good one, converting a header off a free kick into the back of the net with just 55 ticks left on the first half scoreboard to give the Lyons the lead for good at 2-1. Junior midfielder Jack Brusso (Pawtucket, R.I.) had the assist.
De Castro Novaes padded the lead for Wheaton with an unassisted goal coming in the 51st minute of play for a 3-1 lead, before combining with senior back Nick Vanini (Londonderry, N.H.) to find junior forward Alberto Franceschi (Caracas, Venezuela) for his first goal of the season on a header off a free kick from 40 yards out. The Lyons took a 4-1 lead off Franceschi's marker in the 55th minute and the defense held Endicott scoreless for the entire second half and almost all of the final 70 minutes of the contest.
Sophomore midfielder Robert Lloyd (Lexington, Mass.) began the trend of first career goals for Wheaton with his first collegiate tally coming with 13:29 off the clock in the first half when he directed a header inside the near left post on a feed from sophomore Luke Strange (Portland, Ore.) to give the visitors a 1-0 edge. The assist for Strange extended his point-streak to three straight matches to become the first player with at least one point in the team's first three games to start the season since 2017 when Amara Sesay (2014-17) started the season with at least one goal in the first trio of contests for the Lyons. Strange is the first rookie to turn in the feat since at least 2003 at Wheaton.
First year midfielder Joe Mepham (Sudbury, Mass.) knotted the game at 1-1 for the Gulls with his first collegiate goal in the 21st minute of play.
Senior keeper Diego Medina (Yonkers, N.Y.) turned away the one shot he faced to record the victory for the Lyons, while first year goalie Kyle Rosa (Norton, Mass.) made six saves for Endicott.
Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, September 11 when it hosts Roger Williams University for the home opener on Keefe Field at 2:00 p.m., while the Gulls head to Worcester, Mass. on the same day to tangle with Worcester Polytechnic Institute at noon.
