Box Score BEVERLY, Mass. -- Senior defender Amanda Dunton (Huntington Beach, Calif.) scored with just six seconds remaining in regulation to pull the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team even against host Endicott College in a contest that resulted in a 3-3 tie after a scoreless double-overtime this evening at Hempstead Stadium in Beverly, Mass. The Lyons, who are ranked sixth in the most recent United Soccer Coaches Region II poll, are now 5-2-2 on the season, while the Gulls stand at 3-2-2.
Endicott owned a 22-11 shot advantage, including 7-1 in the overtime periods. The teams were tied with five corner kicks apiece.
Dunton's goal was her second of the season and brought Wheaton all the way back from a 3-1 deficit. She began the set piece by taking the corner kick and ended up in position for the score after senior midfielder Chloe Troy (Wethersfield, Conn.) set her up for the marker.
The Gulls took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of scores coming in just over 13 minutes of play to start the first stanza. Senior forward Madeline Mucher (Andover, Mass.) put Endicott on the board when she took a feed from graduate student midfielder Jaymie Caponigro (Swampscott, Mass.) and found the back of the net in the eighth minute for her second marker of the year. The Gulls struck again less than six minutes later when Mucher sent a thru-ball to first year midfielder Riley Rischitelli (North Brookfield, Mass.) for her third tally of the season at the 13:11 mark of the first half.
The Lyons cut the deficit in half with 10:53 left in the half when junior midfielder Julia Markmann (Sønderborg, Denmark) found classmate Sadie Recht (Los Angeles, Calif.) for her first goal of the season to make it 2-1. The score remained the same until the intermission.
Endicott restored its two-goal margin when Caponigro took advantage of a free kick to put her shot past the Wheaton keeper for her first goal of the year and a 3-1 lead at 60:49. Wheaton matched the score just over two minutes later to make it 3-2. Troy made a long run to the corner before feeding senior midfielder Jaime Rattenni (West Greenwich, R.I.) for her second goal of the year at 63:15 for the Lyons.
Sophomore goalie Gabby Marcus (Austin, Texas) made five saves for Wheaton, including three in the overtime periods. Junior keeper Jacqueline Ruggiero (Hyde Park, Mass.) stopped seven shots for the Gulls.
The Lyons will be in action again on Saturday, October 2 when they travel to Cambridge, Mass. to take on New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference opponent Massachusetts Institute of Technology for a 1:00 p.m. contest, while Endicott hosts Roger Williams University on the same day at 4:30 p.m.
