Box Score NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team played visiting Smith College to a 0-0 tie in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference match that featured 52 combined shots by both teams this afternoon at Mirrione Stadium in Norton, Mass. The Lyons are now 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-1 in league play, while the Pioneers stand at 3-2-2 and 1-0-1.
Wheaton sophomore keeper Gabby Marcus (Austin, Texas) was credited with 19 saves in her third career shutout, while senior goalie Naomi Falkenberg (Sutton, Mass.) recorded 12 stops for Smith.
The Pioneers fired seven shots, including four on net in the overtime periods, while the Lyons attempted a pair of shots in the first overtime.
Junior midfielder Natalie Dionne (Brooklyn, Conn.) led Smith with a match-high seven shots (all on goal), while senior midfielder Jaime Rattenni (West Greenwich, R.I.) paced the Wheaton offense with five shots.
The Lyons threatened to end the contest in regulation when senior defender Amanda Dunton (Huntington Beach, Calif.) was able to put a header on a corner kick, but her shot went high with just two ticks left on the second half clock.
Smith looked to score early in the opening half when first year midfielder Anna Gullace (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) fired a shot ticketed for the Wheaton goal, but caught too much off the crossbar. She collected the rebound and took aim again, but Marcus turned it away at the 18-minute mark.
Wheaton also had chances off set piece cornerkick plays with first year back Katie Kutzer (Gorham, Maine) putting a shot high over frame in the 44th minute and senior midfielder Chloe Troy (Wethersfield, Conn.) firing wide right in the 54th minute.
Senior midfielder Zufan Bazzano (Great Barrington, Mass.) and sophomore back Piper Thompson (Jersey City, N.J.) both tested Marcus, following a corner kick, with shots within 40 seconds of another for the Pioneers, but both were denied in the 67th minute. Smith looked to break through again in the 86th minute of play, but first year midfielder Alex Kiernan's (Schwenksville, Pa.) shot was stopped and Bazzano's follow-up was high.
Both teams return to the pitch on Wednesday, Septmber 29 at 7:00 p.m. with the Lyons heading to Beverly, Mass. to take on Endicott College and Smith traveling to Westfield, Mass. for a tilt with Westfield State University.
