Box Score NORTON, Mass. – First year forward Nevaeh Petruzzi (Exeter, N.H.) converted a penalty kick with just 28 seconds remaining in the second overtime to give host Wheaton College (Mass.) a 2-1 victory over visiting Babson College this afternoon at Mirrione Stadium in the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference season opener. The Lyons improve to 4-2-0 overall and 1-0-0 in NEWMAC play, while the Beavers fall to 2-3-1 and 0-1-0.
Petruzzi's score was her first collegiate marker for Wheaton and one of 47 attempts that both teams totaled for the day. Each team fired 20 shots in regulation, while the Lyons took two of the three shots fired in the second overtime session.
Babson got on the board first when senior forward Sydney McLaughlin (Sherborn, Mass.) was able to direct a shot from within a scrum in the box and find the back of the net in the bottom left corner in the 38th minute of play for a 1-0 edge.
Wheaton was held scoreless until the 52nd minute when it knotted the contest at 1-1 in the second half. Senior midfielder Jaime Rattenni (West Greenwich, R.I.) netted her second goal of the year when she managed to steer a corner kick past the Beavers' keeper and into the back of the net for the equalizer. Despite a 14-8 shot margin in the second half, the Lyons settled for the lone goal as the teams headed to overtime tied at 1-1.
Each team recorded a pair of shots in the first overtime period with sophomore Gabby Marcus (Austin, Texas) turning back both shots for Wheaton.
Marcus finished the contest with a career-high 15 saves to earn the victory, while first year goalie Nora Ryan (Abington, Mass.) made six saves for Babson.
The Lyons return to action when they host University of Massachusetts Boston at Mirrione Stadium on Monday, September 20 at 4 p.m., while Babson the Beavers host Endicott College on September 21 at 4 p.m.
