BRIGHTON, Mass. -- Junior midfielder Sophie Shekarchi (Jamestown, R.I.) scored just 91 seconds into overtime to give the Wheaton College field hockey team a 3-2 victory over host Simmons University this evening on Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Lyons win their fourth straight contest to improve to 4-2 on the season for their best start since 2015, while the Sharks suffer their first loss and drop to 3-1.

Wheaton made the most of its shots, including the overtime period, which featured Shekarchi's winning strike as the only shot of the extra session. The goal was the fourth of the season for the junior to tie her for the team lead and give her three game-winning markers on the season.

Simmons owned a 14-8 shot advantage, but the Lyons found the back of the cage with their only shot of the second quarter and converted one of two attempts in the fourth quarter. The Sharks also held an 8-3 margin on penalty corners, but could not take advantage.

Wheaton senior forward Ellie Williams (Wilbraham, Mass.) tallied her third goal of the season to open the game's scoring midway through the second quarter at the 23:49 mark of the match. The score gave the Lyons their first of three leads during the night.

Simmons evened the score with just 1:31 remaining in the third quarter when first year forward Anna Tedeschi (Hanover, Mass.) scored her third marker of the season. 

The Lyons were quick to answer less than five minutes later when first year midfielder Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine) fed senior midfielder Lindsay Janeczek (Glastonbury, Conn.) for her fourth goal of the year at 48:23 of the fourth quarter.

Wheaton's second lead was short-lived, lasting just 40 seconds, before first year midfielder Hannah Groves (Durham, Maine) pulled the home team even at 49:03.

Sophomore keeper Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) earned the victory with five saves for the Lyons, while junior goalie Emma Sheehan (Taunton, Mass.) stopped three shots for the Sharks.

Wheaton returns to play on Saturday, September 18 when it hosts Worcester State University on Nordin Field at 12:00 p.m., while Simmons travels to New London, N.H. to take on Colby-Sawyer College in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at noon.
