Box Score NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College women's soccer team was edged, 1-0, this afternoon by visiting Middlebury College at Mirrione Stadium. The Lyons fall to 2-2-0, while the Panthers improve to 2-1-0.
Middlebury sophomore forward Fanny Lodge (Cambridge, Mass.) netted her second game-winner of the season when she lifted a shot from just outside the top left of the 18-yard box that was just outside of the Wheaton keeper's reach and into the upper left corner of the net in the 55th minute of play for the Panthers.
Middlebury looked to tack on an insurance goal with less than six minutes to play in the game, but senior midfielder Anna Glovin's (Fairfield, Conn.) penalty kick sailed over the net to keep it a one-goal game.
The Panthers maintained an 18-7 shot advantage, while owning an 8-1 gap in corner kicks.
The Lyons controlled possession for the first part of the opening half, but managed just two shots in the stanza.
Four different players directed shots on frame for Wheaton, including sophomore midfielder Gaby Diaz (Lynn, Mass.), seniors midfielder Chloe Troy (Wethersfield, Conn.) and Jaime Rattenni (West Greenwich, R.I.) and junior midfielder Sadie Recht (Los Angelis, Calif.).F
First year keeper Lucy VanNewkirk (Seattle, Wash.) made four saves to record the shutout in her collegiate debut for Middlebury, while sophomore goalie Gabby Marcus (Austin, Texas) stopped seven shots for the Lyons.
Wheaton returns to the pitch on Wednesday, September 15 when it travels to Providence, R.I. to take on Johnson & Wales University for a 7:00 p.m. match, while the Panthers host Plattsburg State on Dragone Field on the same day at 4:30 p.m.
