Springfield, Mass. – April 10, 2021 – In their first contest of the season on Saturday afternoon, the Wheaton Women's Tennis team lost in a close contest to Springfield College by a score of 5-4. The Lyons fall to 0-1 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference play.
Wheaton looked strong in their doubles matches, as they beat Springfield 2-1. Elizabeth Michaud (Lewiston, Maine) and Jordyn Paul (Belchertown, Mass.) won their two-seeded match by a score of 8-5 while Alexis Acosta (Albuquerque, N.M.) and Marieke Mueller (Amesbury, Mass.) got a hard-earned victory in the three-seeded match, beating their opponents 8-7.
In the singles matches, the Lyons fell 4-2. Katie Steinberg (Cumberland, Maine) won in dominant fashion against her opponent for Wheaton, recording set victories of 6-4 and 6-3. Acosta also won her matchup, taking three sets to defeat the opposition in the fourth-seeded single match. In the deciding matchup, Michaud hung tough, but eventually lost 6-7 in the second set.
The Lyons return home next Saturday, April 17 against NEWMAC opponent Clark University at 2:30 p.m.
