Box Score NORTON, Mass. -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) men's basketball team's four-game win streak came to an end in an 80-68 loss to visiting Lasell University this evening at Emerson Gymnasium in Norton, Mass. The Lyons fall to 5-4 on the season, while the Lasers win their third straight to improve to 3-2.
The Lasell defense held Wheaton to just 38.7% (24-62) shooting from the floor, including a season-low 17.4% (4-23) from three-point range, while owning a 48.4% (31-64) shooting mark.
Junior guard Alex Carlisle (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.) led the Lyons with a game-high 26 points on 11-21 from the floor to go with 10 rebounds to record his first career double-double and added an assist. Carlisle has scored 26 or more points in each of his last eight games. Classmate Evan Cook (Dunstable, Mass.) chipped in with seven points, six rebounds, an assist and a steal, while junior guard Marckenley Lima (Roslindale, Mass.) contributed with six points, five rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
Senior guard Kevin Nunez (Dorchester, Mass.) scored 24 points, including the 1,000th of his career. Nunez added seven rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block to his milestone evening for the Lasers, while senior guard EJ Day (Norwalk, Conn.) netted 17 points on 7-11 from the field to go with four assists, four rebounds and two steals. Graduate student forward Jonathan Friberg (North Attleboro, Mass.) finished a rebound short of a double-double with 13 points and nine boards in addition to three steals and two assists.
Junior forward Patrick Oed (The Woodlands, Texas) knocked down a three-pointer for the first points of the game and Wheaton's only lead at 3-0, but first year guard Karim Belhouchet (Newton, Mass.) matched the trey with one of his own to ignite a 22-7 run to give Lasell a 22-10 advantage with 12:43 to play in the opening half. Nunez led the stretch with eight points, including a lay-up following an offensive rebound at the 15:45 mark of the first half for his 999th and 1000th career points.
The Lyons responded with a 15-5 run, paced by five points from Cook, to pull them to within 27-25 with 6:10 showing in the first half, but it was as close as they would get for the contest. Wheaton stayed within 30-27 after a lay-up from Carlisle just a minute later, but Lasell closed out the half with a 13-4 burst, including five points from Friberg, to take a 43-31 halftime lead.
The Lyons shot just 32.4% (11-34) in the second stanza and just couldn't generate any offense, while the Lasers led by double-digits for the entire half. Lasell took its largest lead of the game when graduate student forward Kevin Vanderhorst (Lawrence, Mass.) completed a three-point play with a free throw to contribute to seven points and give the visitors a 64-40 cushion with 11:07 remaining in the game.
The Lasers held a 75-57 lead at the 4:27 mark of the period, before Wheaton scored 11 of the final 16 points to close out the game, including a three-pointer from first year guard Ty Murphy (Dedham, Mass.) and a pair of free throws from first year forward Tarmo Tari (Chelmsford, Mass.) for his first collegiate points.
The Lyons return to action on Saturday, December 4 when they host Bridgewater State University at Emerson Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m., while Lasell heads to Nashua, N.H. on the same day to take on Rivier University to open the Great Northeast Athletic Conference slate at 1:00 p.m.
