Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Senior forward Sadie Shore (Portsmouth, N.H.) posted a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) women's basketball team over visiting Bard College, 68-35, this afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass. The Lyons win their second straight game and improve to 3-3 on the season, while the Raptors fall to 1-4.
Wheaton controlled possession of the ball for the majority of the game, owning a decisive advantage on the glass with a 51-26 rebounding advantage and forced Bard into 29 turnovers that translated into a 39-10 margin in points off turnovers. The Lyons dominated the paint as well, outscoring their guests, 46-18 in points in the paint. In addition, the Wheaton defense held the Raptors to just 29.3% (12-41) shooting from the field.
Shore was 9-16 from the floor and added an assist and a steal in just 16 minutes of action for the Lyons, while first year guard Greta Minos (West Roxbury, Mass.) came off the bench to extend her consecutive games with double-digit points streak to six games to begin her career. She finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot. First year guard Sydney Ropes (Duxbury, Mass.) netted a career-high 10 points, including a pair of three-pointers to go with four assists, a pair of steals and a rebound. First year forward Tianna Rogers (Danbury, Conn.) pulled down a personal-best 10 rebounds and added six points and two steals.
Senior guard Olivia Couture (Greenland, N.H.) led Bard with 18 points and added six boards, three steals and an assist and first year forward Maggy Peyton (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) chipped in with nine points, seven rebounds and an assist.
Wheaton scored the first 10 points of the game, including eight from Ropes, as part of a 15-2 stretch in just under four minutes to begin the contest. The Raptors countered with an 11-2 run, paced by six points from Couture, to cut the deficit to 17-13 with 44 seconds left in the opening quarter.
The visitors stayed within two field goals at 21-17 with 7:46 to play in the second quarter, before the Lyons' defense clamped down as the home team closed out the half with an 18-1 blitz. Minos scored nine points during the closing stretch as Wheaton took a 39-18 advantage into the intermission.
The Lyons opened the third quarter with a 14-2 burst, fueled by six points from Shore, to open up a 53-20 lead for their largest margin and put the game out of reach with 3:32 to go in the quarter. Wheaton owned a 55-25 lead after three quarters of play. The Lyons maintained their lead throughout the majority of the fourth quarter, despite Bard getting as close as 61-35 at the 4:42 mark of the final period.
Wheaton returns to action on Tuesday, November 23 when it travels to Providence, R.I. to take on Johnson & Wales University at 7:00 p.m., while the Raptors host Rochester Institute of Technology on December 3 at 5:30 p.m.
