Paulo Leads Women's Soccer to Upset over Emerson, 1-0, to Advance to NEWMAC Semifinals

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Makenzie Paulo (West Springfield, Mass.) scored the only goal of the night to give seventh-seeded Wheaton College a 1-0 victory over host second-seeded Emerson College in the Quarterfinals of the New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference Tournament at Rotch Field in Boston, Mass. The Lyons improve to 8-7-3 on the season and advance to play on Thursday, November 4 at 7:00 p.m. against sixth-seeded Springfield College, a 1-0 winner over number three seed Clark University. The Lions fall to 10-6-0.

The NEWMAC Tournament victory was Wheaton's first since a 2-1 win over Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the 2017 NEWMAC Quarterfinals and its first post-season shutout since a 1-0 win over Babson College in the 2016 NEWMAC Quarterfinals.

Paulo picked up a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a shot over the Emerson keeper and into the back of the net for her second goal of the season and a 1-0 lead for the Lyons in the 26th minute of play. Senior back Amanda Dunton (Huntington Beach, Calif.) began the scoring chance by serving a ball from just over midfield to the top of the box. The marker proved to be the only offense Wheaton would need as the defense kept the Lions off the board.

The Lyons held a 9-8 shooting edge, despite Emerson owning a 6-4 margin in the second half. The Lions also recorded five corner kicks to Wheaton's four.

Emerson looked to even the match in the 84th minute, but Gina Lukoskie's shot was denied by sophomore keeper Gabby Marcus (Austin, Texas), en-route to her fourth career shutout.

The Lions were awarded a pair of corner kicks in the 87th minute of play, but were unable to turn either opportunity into a scoring chance. The second corner, which occured with just under three minutes to play, was served into the goalmouth, where Marcus intercepted the ball, but an Emerson player collided with her to incur a foul and prevent a score for the home team.

Marcus finished the night with four saves, while first year keeper Amara Schaub (Torrance, Calif.) recorded four saves for Emerson.
