Carlisle Scores 29 for Men's Basketball in 85-82 loss to Wentworth

NORTON, Mass. – Junior guard Alex Carlisle (Saint Johnsbury, Vt.) scored 29 points to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's basketball team in an 85-82 loss to visiting Wentworth Institute of Technology this afternoon at Emerson Gymnasium on the campus of Wheaton in Norton, Mass. The Lyons fall to 1-3 on the season, while the the Leopards improve to 1-1.

Wentworth shot 51.7% (30-58) from the floor, including 50% (12-24) from three-point range.

Carlisle finished 11-16 shooting and added five rebounds, four assists and a steal. Junior guard Evan Cook (Dunstable, Mass.) scored 16 points, including 3-4 from beyond the three-point arc, to go with four rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. Junior forward Patrick Oed (The Woodlands, Texas) established a career-high for the second straight game with 15 points, going a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line, in addition to three boards, three assists and a steal.

Senior forward Trey Carrier (Wilton, N.H.) poured in a career-high 29 points to lead the Leopards. He was 10-13 from the floor and added five rebounds, three assists, a steal and a blocked shot. Junior forward Jack Schaake (Hampton, N.H.) came off the bench to net 15 points on 6-10 from the field to go with eight rebounds and an assist in 21 minutes of play, while junior guard Sam Swift (Arlington, Mass.) contributed with 12 points, including 4-5 from three-point range, in addition to two rebounds, an assist and a steal in 17 minutes off the bench. 

The Lyons erased an eight-point deficit with a 15-4 run over a span of five minutes to take an 82-79 lead with 3:04 to play in the game. Wentworth scored the final six points of the game, while holding Wheaton scoreless, forcing two turnovers and defending the home team into three missed shots down the stretch. Schaake made a lay-up after drawing an offensive foul from the Lyons to give the Leopards an 83-82 edge with 2:07 to go. Carrier added a lay-up with 55 ticks on the clock to secure the win for Wentworth. 

Wheaton owned an 11-10 edge after a Carlisle jumper at the 14:22 mark of the first half, but Schaake fueled a 17-3 run with seven points in a three-plus minute span to give the Leopards a 27-14 lead with 11:04 left in the opening half. Swift later knocked down a jump shot at 7:47 to give Wentworth its largest lead at 40-21.

The Lyons answered with a 19-5 stretch, led by 10 points from Carlisle and seven from Cook, to pull the home team to within 45-40 with 2:20 remaining in the half. The Leopards scored the final four points of the session to take a 49-40 advantage into the break. 

Wentworth maintained a 64-54 margin with 12:56 to play in the second stanza, before Wheaton ripped off eight straight points, capped by a three-point play from Carlisle, to close to within 64-62 in a span of just 50 seconds. The Leopards bumped their lead back to 75-67 at the 8:05 mark, but first year forward Duncan Bubar (Newton, Mass.) paced a 15-4 outburst with six points to give the Lyons their largest lead of the day at 82-79.

Wheaton returns to the hardwood on Tuesday, November 16 when it heads to Framingham, Mass. to take on Framingham State University at 5:30 p.m., while Wentworth hosts Middlebury College tomorrow in Boston at 1:00 p.m.
