Healy Gives Field Hockey 1-0 Overtime Win at Clark

Box Score

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Junior back Bridget Healy (Holyoke, Mass.) scored 4:46 into overtime to give the Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team a 1-0 victory over host Clark University today in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference contest on Granger Field in Worcester, Mass. The Lyons improve win their third straight to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Cougars fall to 2-10 and 0-5. Wheaton's win total is its highest since the 2016 campaign.

Despite holding a clear 20-7 shot advantage, including 10-1 in the fourth quarter, the Clark defense was able to keep the visitors off the board and force the overtime period. The Lyons also owned a 9-3 margin in penalty corners.

Healy ended nearly 65 minutes of scoreless hockey for Wheaton when junior midfielder Sophie Shekarchi (Jamestown, R.I.) found her for her second marker of the year and a 1-0 win.

The Lyons were extremely aggressive to start the fourth quarter, firing eight shots in the first seven minutes of the period, including five on frame. Wheaton looked to be the first team to score in regulation with a penalty stroke 6:45 into the quarter, but senior midfielder Lindsay Janeczek's (Glastonbury, Conn.) shot went wide and the scoreboard remained with zeroes on each side.

Wheaton looked for an opening again in the final minute of the match when first year Lydia Gaudreau (Gorham, Maine) looked fired a shot into the cage that was vacated by the goalie, but junior midfielder Maire O'Donnell (Oak Park, Ill.) came up with her first defensive save of the season to keep the contest without a goal inside the initial 60 minutes of play.

O'Donnell and junior defender Erin Lally (Fairport, N.Y.) led the Cougars offense with two shots apiece.

Sophomore goalie Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) turned away all three shots she faced to record her first career shutout for the Lyons, while Clark senior Grace Sawyer (Windham, Maine) made 11 saves.

Wheaton plays again when it heads to Biddeford, Maine on Tuesday, October 12 to face University of New England at 7:00 p.m., while the Cougars host Nichols College on the same day at the same time.
