Box Score NORTON, Mass. – Junior midfielder Ewan Noble (Newport, R.I.) netted the eventual game-winner and assisted on an insurance goal to lead the Wheaton College (Mass.) men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over visiting Clark University in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference match this afternoon at Keefe Field on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass. The Lyons improve to 12-5-0 overall for their highest win total since 2016 and is now 3-5-0 in league play to conclude their season, while the Cougars fall to 7-7-3 and 1-3-3.
Wheaton honored its nine seniors today, paying tribute to Alex Nickerson (York, Maine), Nick Vanini (Londonderry, N.H.), Troy Mattos (Somerset, Mass.), Luca De Castro Novaes (Scarsdale, N.Y.), Billy Conte (Washington, D.C.), Diego Medina (Yonkers, N.Y.), Ben DeSena (Glastonbury, Conn.), Charlie Stringer (Medford, Ore.) and Niall Blackadar (Warwick, R.I.) in a pre-game ceremony.
Wheaton registered a 14-10 shooting advantage, while Clark held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
The Cougars scored the only goal of the first half, but the Lyons erupted for three unanswered goals in the second half to secure the win.
Conte slipped a cross through a few defenders to the top of the 18-yard box, where Noble met the ball after streaking into the box and fired a shot into the back of the net for his third goal of the season in the 65th minute of play. The goal gave Wheaton its first lead of the day at 2-1.
The Lyons added another goal with 11:50 left in the match to take a 3-1 lead. DeSena served a ball into the box that Noble tracked down and then crossed to his left, where Nickerson put the ball in from the left post for his fourth goal of the year.
Clark broke into the scoring column in the 19th minute of the opening half off a corner kick set piece play. Graduate student Alex Nicholson (Barrington, R.I.) sent his corner kick into the box, where it was boxed around before junior back Ethan Furphy (Cortland Manor, N.Y.) settled the ball and sent it to first year forward Lucas Saia (Pembroke, Mass.) on the left post, where he fired a shot into the back of the net for his second tally of the season.
The Cougars goal was the only score of the first half for a 1-0 visitors lead at the intermission.
Wheaton knotted the match at 1-1 just 2:48 into the second half. De Castro Novaes pulled the Lyons even when he lifted a free kick from just outside of the box over the Clark keeper for his third marker of the season.
Medina finished with four saves to earn the victory for the Lyons, while graduate student goalie Melvin Vincent (Rochester, Mass.) stopped five shots for the Cougars.
