Box Score WELLESLEY, MA -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) women's soccer team was defeated by host Wellesley College, 2-1, this afternoon in Wellesley, Mass. The Lyons fall to 7-7-3 overall and 3-5-2 in league play in their final regular season match, while the Blue improve to 6-4-3 and 2-4-3.
Wellesley held a slight 10-9 shooting edge in an evenly matched contest and owned a 2-1 margin in corner kicks.
The first quality opportunity in the first half came on a shot from Wheaton senior midfielder Chloe Troy (Wethersfield, Conn.) that sailed just high. Later in the half, first year forward Marleigh Ausbrooks (Washington, D.C.) broke free for the Blue and made her way towards the net. With the Lyon goalie coming towards the top of the box, Ausbrooks fired it over her head but the shot flew a touch too high and over the net. The teams would head into the break at a scoreless tie.
Wheaton took a 1-0 lead midway through the second half when first year midfielder Nevaeh Petruzzi (Exeter, N.H.) found Chloe Troy (Wethersfield, Conn.) who scored just outside the 18-yard box for her team-leading ninth goal of the season in the 65th minute of play.
Wellesley scored the final two goals in a five and a half minute span to provide the difference in the game. Sophomore midfielder Cindy Zeng (Mill Creek, Wash.) sent a free kick into the box, where Ausbrooks scored the game-tying marker in the 76th minute. Ausbrooks came through again for the home team. junior forward Eliza Roy (Camden, Maine) gained control and headed a pass over to Ausbrooks. The first year made a quick move and put up a shot that proved to be the game winning goal and second tally of the afternoon and seventh of the season for a 2-1 Blue lead in the 81st minute of play.
Wheaton had one last chance with under a minute to play as Petruzzi took a shot that was saved by Wellesley keeper Kendall Lincoln (San Diego, Calif.).
Sophomore keeper Gabby Marcus (Austin, Texas) made five saves for the Lyons, while Lincoln turned away five shots to record the win for the Blue.
Wheaton will await its playoff fate with the results of the rest of the league's games concluding on Saturday, October 30, while Wellesley returns to action on October 30, hosting Mount Holyoke College at 1:00 p.m.
