Field Hockey Shut Out at University of New England, 3-0

Box Score

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The Wheaton College (Mass.) field hockey team was defeated by host University of New England, 3-0, this evening at Blue Bolt Field in Biddeford, Mass. The Lyons' winning streak ends at three straight as they fall to 7-6 on the season, while the Nor'Easters improve to 8-4.

UNE owned an 18-1 shot advantage, while holding a 12-1 margin on penalty corners.

The Nor'Easters broke into the scoring column just 29 seconds into the match when junior forward Lindsay Bruns (Belfast, Maine) sent a cross from the right side of the circle to the goal mouth, where senior forward Jillian Lachapelle (Gilford, N.H.) finished with a one-timer for her team-leading eighth marker to give the home team a 1-0 edge.

Wheaton's defense kept University of New England off the board for the next 24 minutes, but senior forward Bailey Lynch (Upton, Mass.) intercepted a pass in the Lyons' zone and turned it into her second score of the year to give the Nor'Easters a 2-0 margin with five and a half minutes left in the second stanza.

Bruns capped the night's scoring with a goal of her own just over five minutes into the third quarter when she collected a loose ball on the right side and found the back of the cage for her sixth goal of the season. The 3-0 count stood up as the winning score for UNE.

The Lyons looked to put a goal on the board in the final minutes of the third quarter when first year Olivia Birbara (West Harford, Conn.) fired a shot on goal following a penalty corner, but University of New England junior keeper Linsday Pych (West Milford, N.J.) denied the attempt to preserve the shutout for her second clean sheet of the season.

Sophomore goalie Emma Lapreziosa (Bowdoinham, Maine) stopped four shots for Wheaton.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, October 16 when they head to Babson Park, Mass. to play New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference foe Babson College at 12:00 p.m., while the Nor'Easters head to Beverly, Mass. on the same day to take on Commonwealth Coast Conference rival Endicott College at 1:00 p.m.
