Women's Lacrosse Defeats Mount Holyoke to Earn Third Straight NEWMAC Victory

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team earned their third straight New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory to remain undefeated in conference play after defeating the Mount Holyoke College Lyons, 13-5, Wednesday evening at Nordin Field.

With the win, Wheaton advances to 6-4 (3-0 NEWMAC) while Mount Holyoke drops to 2-8 (0-3 NEWMAC).

Wheaton was guided by Giovanna Bishop who registered five goals and one assists during the game while sophomore Maddy Lahm tallied four goals, junior Katie Peters recorded two, first-year Molly Covarrubias dished out one goal and four saves and first-year Lilly Callahan knocked through on goal. Mount Holyoke collected their goals from Kaitlin Braz (two goals, two assists), Mary LaVigne (two goals) and Leila Kouakou (one goal, one assist).

Wheaton opened the first half with five unanswered goals, the first coming from Covarrubias who went on to make two assists before the half was over. Wheaton's defense remained hot until Mount Holyoke's Braz broke through to put the Lyons on the board.

Entering the second half ahead up 6-1, Bishop would rope in an unassisted goal to push Wheaton's lead ahead before Mount Holyoke's Braz dished out her second goal of the game to make it, 7-2. 

Mount Holyoke would put up three more goals before the clock ticked down, but it wouldn't be enough a Wheaton went on to score seven goals in the second half, sealing their 13-5 victory.

Starting junior goalkeeper Molly Witten (5-2) earned the win for Wheaton while collecting nine saves. Mount Holyoke goalkeepers Isa Rodriguez (1-5) claimed eight saves and Mia Wysocki tallied five.

The Lyons compete next on Saturday when they host Babson College with game time slated for 1 p.m.
