LEWISTON, Maine - The Wheaton College women's tennis team traveled to Bates College to battle the Bobcats on Friday in Merrill Gymnasium. The Bobcats went on to defeat the Lyons, 8-1, in a non-conference match.
Bates started off with a 2-1 lead going into singles play, thanks to an 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles by senior Elizabeth Erbafina and first-year Isabelle Rovinski over sophomore Connor O'Keefe and first-year Harley Swainston, and an 8-3 win at No. 3 doubles by first-year Lauren Hernandez and senior Kate Rosenthal over junior Jodi Katz and senior Michelle Trainor.
The visiting Lyons won their lone point in a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles, where sophomore Ines de Bracamonte and first-year Isabelle Garvanne edged Bates sophomore Bella Stone and junior Maisie Silverman 9-8 (3).
Silverman defeated de Bracamonte 6-0, 6-1 at first singles, setting the tone for a Bobcat sweep the rest of the way. Erbafina defeated Garvanne 6-2, 6-4 at No. 2 singles; Stone defeated O'Keefe 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles; Rovinski downed Swainston 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4; Rosenthal shut out Trainor 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5; and senior Olivia Voccola (Falmouth, Maine) topped first-year Olivia Donovan 6-0, 6-3 at sixth singles.
The Lyons host Colby-Sawyer on Saturday to conclude the 2016-17 season with match time set for 1 p.m.
