Women's Lacrosse Defeats Coast Guard

Box Score

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team defeated the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Bears, 11-4, on Saturday in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest hosted at Cadet Memorial Field.

The Lyons improve to 5-4 on the season and 2-0 in the NEWMAC while the Bears drop to 3-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Sophomore Maddy Lahm had a game high four goals for Wheaton while first-year Molly Covarrubias had four points with three goals and one assist. Covarrubias is fifth in the conference with 32 points on the season. First-year Lilly Callahan netted two goals while senior Giovanna Bishop and junior Katie Peters each had a goal and an assist.

Coast Guard was led by four different players who each had a goal: senior Cecelia Hosley, juniors Daria McKenna and Niki Kirchner-Hope and sophomore Anna McGoldrick. First-year Lydia VanWinkle had the teams only assist.

The Lyons stormed out to a 7-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of the opening period led by two goals from Callahan and Covarrubias.

The Bears bounced back with just under nine minutes to go in the half as VanWinkle hit McGoldrick with a pass as she curled off the left side of the crease and fired it into the back of the net for Coast Guard's first tally of the game.

Hosley then took advantage of a free position shot and rifled it into the back of the net making the score 7-2 with 1:25 to go in the half.

Covarrubias pushed the advantage back to six just before the end of the half making the score 8-2 at the end of the opening stanza.

The second half turned into a defensive battle as neither team scored through nearly the first 20 minutes of the period.

Kirchner-Hope broke the second half deadlock with an unassisted goal at the 11:07 mark, making the score 8-3.

Lahm however scored three of the final four goals of the game as Wheaton wrapped up the 11-4 victory.

Junior Molly Witten (4-2) started in goal for the Lyons allowing two goals and making zero saves. Juniors Galicia Rothe and Jessie Martinez combined to allow two goals and make two saves in the second half.

Wheaton competes next on Wednesday as they host the Mount Hount Holyoke Lyons with game time set for 7 p.m. for the first of a three-game home stand.
