Lyons Open NEWMAC Action With 11-3 Win Over Smith

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College women's lacrosse team earned an 11-3 win over visiting Smith College Wednesday night in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opener for both sides. 

Wheaton was led by Lilly Callahan, who finished with a game-high five goals, while senior Giovanna Bishop collected a game-high five assists. Carline Myran netted two of the Pioneers three goals. 

Wheaton got things started with back-to-back free position goals from first-year Molly Covarrubias and Bishop. Trailing 2-0, Smith cut the deficit in half with 22:08 to go in the opening half with a goal from Emily Briggs. Sydney Garner earned the assist on the play. 

Bishop picked up her first assist of the game seven minutes later when she found Julia Lustenader, pushing the Lyon advantage back to two. With a little under three minutes remaining in the opening frame, Bishop found Callahan for the first of her five goals. 

Wheaton started the second half as strong as the first, opening the period with four straight goals. Callahan got things going with consecutive goals with Bishop picking up the assist onthefirst goal, while Katie Peters helped out with the second. Peters collected a goal of her own minutes later with help from Hannah Gasperoni. It took Wheaton seconds to score its next goal with Peters hitting Maddy Lahm in stride at the 21:47 mark. 

Myran ended the Pioneers scoreless streak with 13:11 left in regulation. Leading 8-2, Wheaton scored three more goals over the next nine minutes of play with another from Peters and two more from Callahan. Myran netted the final goal of the contest, cutting the Pioneer deficit to eight to end the contest. 

Molly Witten earned the complete game win for the Lyons, coming up with seven saves. Sarah Price made seven saves for the Pioneers. 

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, April 1 for a NEWMAC contest at the Coast Guard. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m.
