RECORDS: Wheaton (13-3-1, 7-2 NEWMAC) - Springfield (12-5, 5-4 NEWMAC)
LOCATION: Norton, Mass. (Mirrione Stadium)
THE RUNDOWN:
- The win hands Wheaton its first defeat of Springfield since the 2013-14 season when the Lyons defeated the Pride 1-0 in the regular season.
- Neither side generated many scoring opportunities with Wheaton goalkeeper Leann Wolf coming up with just three saves, while Springfield's Ciara Boucher made just one.
- After a scoreless first half, first-years Hannah Lepordo and Aymara O'Brien-Pappalardo setup Wheaton for the first goal of the game in the 50th minute. The duo found senior captain Megan Healy who buried the ball in the back of the net, putting Wheaton ahead 1-0.
- The Pride countered just eight minutes later with a breakaway goal by Kim Quiles. The goal is the 10th of the season for Quiles, which is second best in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).
- With the sun setting and storm clouds rolling in, the two sides traded possession of the ball but were unable to generate a game-winner, forcing overtime.
- Springfield got one shot on goal in the overtime period but it was met by Wolf.
- With just over a minute remaining in the first overtime period Wheaton took control of the ball on the far side of the field and sent a well-paced ball forward. Lepordo, who was man-marked all contest, found a second wind and went flying down the sideline, beating two defenders, before cutting the ball to the inside and firing off a shot to the far post netting.
- Lepordo's goal is her 10th of the season, which ties the Wheaton first-year with Quiles for second in the NEWMAC. The goal is also Lepordo's third game-winning goal of the year.
