NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's swimming & diving team honored its seniors on Saturday as the Lyons battled the Babson College Beavers in Balfour Natatorium. Wheaton earned the 181-111 victory, claiming another New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win.
The Lyons opened the meet with an immediate first place finish, coming in the 200-yard medley relay when sophomore Jacob Cost, senior Samuel Zarfos, junior Jonathan Dunnett and senior Frederick Garneau clocked in a final time of 1:37.43. Junior Zeke DeWitt went on to score second place in the 1,000-meter freestlye, earning a new personal best time of 10:48.48.
Wheaton went 1-2-3 in the 200-yard freestyle after senior Ross Johnston (1:49.40), senior Todd Lambert (1:50.93) and senior Jerard Fredette (1:55.00) received top times. Same thing went in the 50-yard backstroke as Cost (25.70), sophomore Chris Steward (26.84) and sophomore Timmer Sposato (27.74) tapped top three finals with Sposato earning a personal best time.
It became a heated battle in the 100-yard butterfly when Dunnett timed in a first place finish of 52.79, just .14 seconds ahead of Babson's second place finisher. Garneau tallied first place in the 50-yard freestyle (21.92) and 100-yard freestyle (49.03) to continue Wheaton's strong push into the last half of the meet.
In the 100-yard backstroke, it was another top three performance by the Lyons as Cost (53.98), Johnston (54.43) and sophomore Kevin Silva (58.14) recorded top times. Silva notched a season-best time. Later, three Lyons registered personal-best times in the 50-yard butterfly, including Dunnett (24.24), DeWitt (26.84) and first-year Demetri Spiliotis (26.97).
Senior Ricky Davies led the Lyons in the three-meter dive as he placed first with a 256.05 final. First-year Aaron Howe placed second at 218.85, but went on to earn first place in the one-meter at 259.13. Davies followed in second at 221.40.
The Lyons compete next against WPI and UMass-Dartmouth in a tri-meet on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
