Black Scores 19 Points Against MIT; Ties Career-High

Box Score

NORTON, Mass. - Senior Sophia Black once again netted a career-high 19 points in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest against MIT. This time the guard did it in the Lyons 67-49 home loss to the Engineers on Thursday night in Emerson Gymnasium.

Black, who knocked down eight of her 13 attempts from the floor and 3-of-5 from the free-throw line, also scored 19 points against the Engineers on Dec. 7 in the first meeting between the two sides. Black chipped in four rebounds, three assists and a steal. First-year Chelsea Rairdon scored nine points off the bench, while also collecting four boards. Ruthie Zientek led the team in rebounds with seven, six off which came on the defensive side, while first-year Sara McLeman collected six.

Kara Holinski led all players with 25 points, making 9-of-18 from the floor, including 7-of-12 from three-point range. Liana Ilutzi ended the contest with the games only double-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down 11 boards in the win. Dolly Yuan also finished in double-figures for the Engineers, netting 14 points.

MIT, who opened the game with a 7-2 advantage with baskets from Kristen Ngan, Ilutzi and Yuan, saw that lead disappear with six straight points from Black. The Engineers recaptured the lead with 5:20 to go in the first quarter with a layup from Sophie Gershon. MIT retained the lead throughout the rest of the opening frame and most of the second quarter, before an unconventional three-point play by Rairdon earned the Lyons the lead (27-26) with 2:05 remaining until halftime. The lead was short lived with the Engineers closing out the half with a 31-29 advantage.

MIT put the game out of reach in the third quarter, knocking down 20 points, before outscoring the Lyons 16-7 in the fourth.

The Lyons out rebounded the Engineers, 36-29, while taking advantage of their chances from the free-throw line, ending the game shooting 72.7% (8-11). MIT found success off the fast break, while limiting its turnovers to just eight, compared to Wheaton's 18.

Wheaton returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. in a NEWMAC home game against Mount Holyoke.
