NORTON, Mass. - For the first time since 2011, the Wheaton College men's basketball team defeated the Springfield College Pride, 67-63, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup Wednesday evening in Emerson Gymnasium.

The Lyons advance to 8-7 overall and remain undefeated in NEWMAC competition at 3-0. The Pride fall to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in conference.

Wheaton was guided by junior Ryan Fogarty who led the team with 19 points as senior Quinton Dale was right behind him with 18 while also tallying a team-high 10 rebounds. 

Springfield was led by sophomore Kevin Durkin who registered a team-high 16 points as first-year Heath Post marked a team-high 13 rebounds while also collecting eight points. Junior Brandon Eckles went 2-of-3 from long distance and recorded 10 points off the bench.

Wheaton opened the game with a layup from Dale that would spark a seven-point run for the Lyons until first-year Trey Witter notched a layup of his own to get Springfield on the board. Witter recorded a three-pointer later in the half and the Pride would carry momentum to tie the game at 10. Following with a long shot jump ball later in the half from Eckles, the Pride would pull ahead 21-13, but the Lyons would regain control after two sets of free throws from Dale put Wheaton within one. The teams entered halftime tied 32-32 after junior Andy McNulty tallied a long three for Springfield.

The Pride would score first to start the second half, but Fogarty and junior Liam Bruno would go on a 10-point scoring spree to later push themselves up 45-42. From there it would be a battle of defense as each team gathered turnovers. With 2:21 remaining, Dale notched a layup to bring the score to 63-61 in the Lyons favor. Wheaton would utilize fouls to gain the last four points of the game off free throws and earn the 67-63 victory.

The Lyons concluded the game with a 43-26 advantage on rebounds and registered 74.3% (26-35) from the free throw line as the Pride went 65.2% (15-23).

Wheaton travels to No. 1 Babson College on Saturday with tip off scheduled for 2 p.m. for another NEWMAC contest.
